Conductors

The Winds of Wisconsin ensemble currently is led by conductor Scott Teeple. Associate conductor is Ernest Jennings.

Scott Teeple Ernest Jennings

Scott Teeple joins the School of Music faculty as associate professor beginning with the 2007-08 academic year. During 2006-07, he was in Madison on a leave of absence as director of bands at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. He conducts the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Contemporary Chamber Ensemble and teaches conducting. Under his direction, the UW-SP Bands toured and performed across the state of Wisconsin, including the Wisconsin State Music Educator's Conference in Madison. The ensembles premiered numerous compositions; participated in national consortia; and were active participants in commissioning new works for wind band (most recently commissioning Richard Danielpour and Marianne Ploger). Mr. Teeple has initiated a student composers' competition and has initiated programs to support music educators in public and private schools.

Before coming to Wisconsin, Mr. Teeple was the assistant director of bands at the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor. Prior to Ann Arbor, Mr. Teeple's public school experience was as instrumental music educator at Port Huron Northern High School where he conducted the concert, marching and jazz bands and taught a music appreciation course. Mr. Teeple has also served on the faculty at St. Clair County Community College and has taught low brass for the All-State program at Interlochen.

He continues to be in demand as a clinician and guest conductor throughout the United States. Along with his regular duties, he has served as guest clinician at the Conn-Selmer University summer program for music educators and continues to serve as a guest conductor/clinician throughout the United States. As a conductor, he has participated in numerous conducting clinics across the country, most recently in the Pierre Boulez Workshop at Carnegie Hall. He has served on the executive board of the Wisconsin Music Educators' Association (North-Central Vice President) and on the Arts Alliance of Portage County.

Mr. Teeple received his B.M. in music education and M. M. in conducting from the University of Michigan. He is a member of the College Band Director's National Association, the Music Educator's National Conference, and the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles. Mr. Teeple has won numerous honors and awards, including the William D. Revelli Scholarship, "Who's Who In America," along with membership in Phi Mu Alpha, Kappa Kappa Psi, Pi Kappa Lambda and Phi Eta Sigma.

Ernest Jennings, assistant director and percussion instructor for the University of Wisconsin Band comes to Madison from the University of Iowa, where he completed his M.A. in percussion performance. During his graduate work, Mr. Jennings studied conducting with Professor Myron Welch, director of bands at the University of Iowa. As assistant director, Mr. Jennings conducts a School of Music University Band, serves as a band clinician through the UW School of Music’s Arts Outreach program, is responsible for the writing, preparation and teaching of the UW-Marching Band percussion arrangements, organizes the UW Varsity Band spring concert tour, and conducts performances for Women’s Basketball and Volleyball athletic events. In addition to his work with the marching band, Mr. Jennings is a frequent guest conductor and clinician.

Prior to graduate study, Mr. Jennings taught public school at Des Moines North and East High Schools where he conducted concert, marching, and jazz bands. For several years Mr. Jennings has been active as a clinician, adjudicator, percussion instructor, and performer throughout the Midwest.

Mr. Jennings’ military experience includes former membership in the U.S. Navy Steel Drum Band as well as the 34th Army Band. As a former member of the Iowa Army National Guard, Mr. Jennings received his commission in 2001 through the Iowa National Guard Officer Candidate School. After serving a tour of duty from 2003-2004 as a platoon leader during “Operation Iraqi Freedom,” Mr. Jennings was promoted to the rank of captain. During his active duty Mr. Jennings received several commendations for his service and leadership. Currently, Mr. Jennings serves in the Wisconsin Army National Guard as S1 (Personnel Officer) as well as detachment commander with the 641st Troop Command Battalion in Madison, Wisconsin.

Mr. Jennings earned a B.A. from Limestone College, a B.M.E. from Drake University, an M.A. in percussion performance from the University of Iowa, and is a graduate of the United States Navy School of Music.

Mr. Jennings is an active member of Music Educator’s National Conference, Iowa Bandmaster’s Association, Percussive Arts Society, and the Iowa as well as Wisconsin Army National Guard Officer’s Association.
