Key Calendar Dates for 2008

Enrollment—Summer enrollment begins March 31 and continues through the add period for each session. See enrollment schedule by student classification.

Holidays—No Classes
Memorial Day observed—Monday, May 26
Independence Day—Friday, July 4

Instruction Begin-Dates for Major Sessions
Three-Week Early Session—May 27
Eight-Week General Session—June 16

Examinations
Mid-session exams are typically held during the scheduled class period. Final exams are given the last class meeting period unless otherwise announced by the faculty member in charge of the class.

Terms/Explanations

Class Standing—For purposes of promotion and entry into some courses, the following thresholds apply: senior standing—86 credits/172 grade points; junior standing—54/108; sophomore standing—24/48.

Consent of Instructor (Cons Inst)—Authorization required in advance.

Continuing Student—Student attended UW-Madison, or enrolled and then withdrew, during the preceding term. An undergraduate student who graduates and enters Graduate School the next term enrolls as a new graduate student.

Concurrent enrollment (con reg)—Simultaneous enrollment in two (or more) courses as specified by prerequisites.

Course Description—Descriptions available in Undergraduate/Graduate Catalogs.

Course Number—Three-digit number displayed before course title. Courses numbered 001-299 may be taken for credit by undergraduates only; 300-699 by undergraduates and graduates; 700-999 by graduates only. Special students may enroll in courses open to undergraduates if space is available.

Credit—Official credit or range of credits approved by Divisional Committee. Students may not enroll for more or fewer credits than shown in the timetable.

Crosslisted Courses—The same three-digit course number listed in two or more departments but each listed with a unique call number.

Departmental Permission/Authorization—Students selecting courses identified as requiring departmental permission or authorization must contact appropriate department to obtain that permission before enrolling.

Dropped Student—Student ineligible to enroll because of scholastic or disciplinary deficiencies. Readmission application must be made to the appropriate dean.

In Good Standing—Student is eligible to continue/reenter or to transfer elsewhere.

Instructor—Instructor's appointment type:

1 — Faculty
2 — Emerita/Emeritus
3 — Clinical/CHS Faculty
4 — Visiting/Adjunct Faculty
5 — Lecturer/Faculty Associate
6 — Other Academic Staff
7 — Graduate Assistant

New Student—Student has never enrolled at UW-Madison.

Not Open to Freshmen—Not open to regular first-year matriculated students.

Prerequisite—The background, class standing, or course work needed to assimilate the course material.

Reentry Student—Student previously enrolled at UW-Madison but not during the preceding term.

Section—Type of instruction, followed by a one to three-digit section number. Individual instruction courses list only type of instruction.

Session Code—Three-letter identifier showing the length of a summer session, begin-date, and number of weeks.

Service-Learning (S-L)—Joining academic theory with community service to enhance learning. See department footnotes for S-L courses, or view www.morgridge.wisc.edu/index.html.

Title of Course—Official title as approved by Divisional Committee. Full descriptions available in undergraduate/graduate catalogs.

Transfer Student—New UW-Madison undergraduate previously enrolled at another institution or UW campus.
