Police, Fire, and Public Safety

These classes focus on the management of public safety agencies including police, fire, and emergency services. We offer one-day classes, a law enforcement certificate, onsite training, and other professional development opportunities.

Upcoming Programs

Certificate programs for law enforcement supervisors and managers:

The certificate program is a 36-day, two-day-a-month program. Topics include leadership, strategic planning, budgeting, human resource management, ethics, and more. The program leads to the Certified Public Manager credential, and may be reimbursable through DOJ Training and Standards funding. A certificate program is currently being held in Greenfield, WI. Fire Service Leadership Institute

Fire Service Leadership Institutes are offered by UW–Madison Professional Development and Applied Studies. An institute includes eight one-day classes, leading to a Certificate in Fire Service Leadership.

The Wisconsin Fire Chiefs' Education Association co-sponsors an institute intended for those in the fire service who are expected to move into chiefs/assistant chiefs/captains positions in the next 5-7 years, or new chiefs, especially in small or volunteer/paid-on-call departments.

Classes are offered twice a year. All classes are fully applicable to the Wisconsin Certified Public Manager Program, if a person chooses to continue towards full certification within three years of completing an institute. An individual who does not seek certification can take any of these classes.

Classes in the the Fire Chiefs' Institute include:

  • Fire Service Leadership (Part I): Leadership Assessment, Styles, Principles (October 31, 2007 in La Crosse)
  • Fire Service Leadership (Part II): Ethics (March 12, 2008 in The Dells)
  • Fire Service Human Resources: HR Elements including selection, training, motivation (November 5, 2008 in Racine)
  • Fire Service Decision Making: Strategic Planning and Management (March 11, 2009 in Lake Delton)
  • Fire Service Finance: Budgeting Approaches and Capital Budgeting
  • Fire Service Labor Relations: Fundamentals of Labor Relations; Discipline and Grievance
  • Fire Service Performance Excellence: Performance Measurement and Management
  • Fire Service Relations: Working with Councils, Boards, Commissions and Citizens

  • Fire Service Relations: Working with Councils, Boards, Commissions and Citizens (February 19, 2009)
  • Fire Service Finance: Budgeting Approaches and Capital Budgeting (September 23, 2009)
  • Fire Service Labor Relations: Fundamentals of Labor Relations; Discipline and Grievance (September 24, 2009)

Classes are offered two to three times per year. All classes are fully applicable to the Wisconsin Certified Public Manager Program, if a person chooses to continue towards full certification within three years of completing an institute.
