The Delinquency Control Institute, offered by UW-Madison for over 40 years, is a one-week program that provides law enforcement personnel and related professionals who work in the juvenile justice system with a fundamental understanding of juvenile law and practice.
This intensive, focused and cost-effective format focuses on juvenile justice law and practice. Students discuss issues with an attorney, intake worker, court commissioner, corrections staff and a school safety administrator, all of whom are experienced in the field of juvenile justice. In the institute students learn the most current information regarding:
An expanded section on preventing, predicting, and responding to school violence, with gues speakers and discussion of important cases. Included is a case study: The Green Bay Experience on School Violence: Tragedy Averted.
New options for law enforcement dealing with mental health crisis situations and emergency detention.
You also have an opportunity to discuss issues with an intake worker, a court commissioner, and juvenile corrections professional staff, all of whom are experienced in juvenile justice.
Frank J. Crisafi is the principal instructor. Crisafi is a former chief juvenile prosecutor for Milwaukee County. He now serves as an attorney for the Madison Metropolitan School District. Also instructing:
Lindsey Draper is a Court Commissioner for Milwaukee County and a former Assistant District Attorney, Milwaukee County Children's Court.
Vic Karaliunas is a Waukesha County Intake Worker.
Pamela Eitland, Vernon County director of human services, Vernon County law enforcement representative.
Susan Paddock, a professor of governmental affairs, directs the Wisconsin Certified Public Manager Program in the UW–Madison Division of Continuing Studies, Department of Professional Development and Applied Studies.
Dave Perlman is an assistant attorney general with the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
Henry Plum is a former Assistant District Attorney, Children's Division, Milwaukee County; he is now in private practice.
Luis Yudice is the coordinator of school security for the Madison Metropolitan School District and a former captain in the Madison Police Department.
Other instructors include members of administrative and residential custody staff from Department of Corrections, Division of Juvenile Corrections.
The Institute is planned and directed by Frank Crisafi and Susan Paddock. The course coordinator is Susan Paddock. For more information call 608-262-2576.
Enrollment: Complete and return the enrollment form (see registration options below). Space in the Institute is limited, and students are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Students will not be accepted formally until an enrollment form is received. All students will be notified of their acceptance.
Fee: The fee for the 2010 program is $375 per person, which covers instruction, materials and coffee/refreshment breaks.
Class schedule: Monday-Thursday: 8:30 am-4:00 pm, Friday: 8:30 am-1:00 pm
Meals and lodging: Participants and their departments are responsible for all travel, food, lodging and parking costs they might incur. Participants are responsible for making their own lodging reservations. Rooms are being held at Lowell Center. Rooms are $89/single, $99/double per night (state rate; includes breakfast and parking). Deadlines and cancellations: Enrollment is limited. Students accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration fees, minus a $50 administrative charge, will be refunded if cancellation is received at least one week prior to the start of the course. You may send a substitute if you are unable to attend. Please notify us as soon as possible of any attendance changes, so that we can correst rosters or notify a person on the program waiting list.
We will be happy to "reserve" space(s) in the Institute for departments making the request.
