The Wisconsin Public Works Management Institute (PWMI) continues the leadership training offered in the Public Works Supervisory Academy by providing advanced management classes for managers and public works leaders.
The Institute is recognized and approved by the American Public Works Association (APWA) and offered by UW-Madison Continuing Studies in cooperation with UW-Madison Engineering Professional Development and Wisconsin Chapter-APWA.
All classes are offered each calendar year. You may register for any of these classes without applying for the Institute.
Budgeting, fund accounting, and grant administration
Learn how to prepare an annual budget, read operating budgets, and charge back expenditures to appropriate line items in this one-day workshop. Note: this class will focus on capital budgeting.

Engineering Professional Development: Municipal Engineering Fundamentals for Nonengineers
Learn the key methods and concepts used by public works engineers to design, operate and maintain municipal facilities.

Capstone Class This is the final class in the Institute. Only participants who have completed all other classes in the Academy and the Institute may enroll in this class. This class will focus on recent and cutting-edge topics, such as managing in an economic recession, developing collaborative relationships with other jurisdictions, working effectively with state and federal government agencies and representatives, and responding to emerging human resource challenges.
The Public Works Management Capstone class and the Institute graduation are tentatively scheduled to be held at the APWA, WI Chapter statewide conference in the fall of 2012.

For students already enrolled in the Public Works Management Institute program, each class, except for the Municipal Engineering 2-day class, costs $155, which covers instruction, materials, and 0.6 (6 hours) of continuing education units. Individuals registering for two or more classes on the same registration form pay $120/class, a savings of $35/person. Lunch is on your own.
The Municipal Engineering class is offered to the public at a fee of $795. Wisconsin APWA members (including persons employed by agency members) are eligible to receive a $400 scholarship to attend. For information about obtaining an APWA scholarship, check out the APWA Web site.

Municipalities/agencies that send two or more participants to attend PWMI classes-except for Municipal Engineering-pay $120/person/class, a savings of $35/person.
APWA members working for a municipality are eligible for a 50% tuition reimbursement and non-members for a 25% reimbursement. For more information check out the APWA Web site.

charge, will be refunded if you are unable to attend.
