The Public Works Supervisory Academy is a nine-class program that provides first- and second-line supervisors with the tools to be effective managers. Our knowledgeable and experienced instructors provide up-todate information, as well as opportunities to practice skills and to problem solve with other participants.
The nine classes that comprise the Public Works Supervisory academy are:
All classes are offered each calendar year. You can take classes in any order and you can enroll in individual sessions without enrolling in the entire Academy. Completion of the Academy fulfills 54 hours of the Wisconsin Certified Public Manager® Program. UW-Madison Continuing Studies offers the Academy in cooperation with the American Public Works Association Wisconsin Chapter.
How you'll benefit:
PWSA graduates are encouraged to continue their professional development by enrolling in the Public Works Management Institute.

Equipment use and workplace safety
April 25, 2012; Instructor: Nicole Nigon O'Connor
Learn new safety issues and compliance equirements in this one-day workshop. Also examine safety committees and accident surveys. Register online.
Nuts and bolts of personnel management
February 8, 2012; Instructor: Steve Pudloski
Use the Tool Kit provided in the class to help you interview, select, train, evaluate, retain, and energize employees. Learn how to keep and monitor employee time sheets and records, and how to introduce and implement basic work rules. Register online.
Purchasing and inventory control

Learn straightforward approaches to controlling large or small capital expenditures. Examine purchasing practices that promote savings, including advanced blanket, cooperative agreements, and two-state bidding. Identify Wisconsin laws that govern contracting, and common purchasing/inventory control errors that supervisors make. Register online.

Learn to identify and respond to citizen needs, and deal with difficult or unrealistic demands, so that you can provide better service. Practice becoming a good listener and developing a way of thinking so that serving the people of your community becomes second nature. Register online.
Management assessment

Self-awareness is the cornerstone of great management. Through a series of self-assessments completed before class, learn how your own style and needs compare with other public managers, and with your agency goals. Discover strategies to build on your strengths and address limitations. Register by March 28 to complete self-assessments before class. We use class time for analysis and discussion. Register online.
Fundamentals of Government/Ethics
June 6, 2012, Instructor: Steve Pudloski, Howard Rosen
Consider how the powers and structures of Wisconsin local governments set the framework for local services and their delivery. Learn how cooperative arrangements between local governments can be beneficial. Review professional and conduct ethics codes through ethical case studies. Register online.
Municipal Engineering Fundamentals for Non-Engineers
Learn the key methods and concepts used by public works engineers to design, operate and maintain municipal facilities. View a complete class description or register: 800-462-0876.
Each class costs $155, which covers instruction, materials, and 0.6 (6 hours) of continuing education units. Individuals registering for two or more classes on the same registration form pay $120/class, a savings of $35/person.

Municipalities/agencies that send two or more participants pay $120/person/class, a savings of $35/person.
APWA members working for a municipality are eligible for a 50% tuition reimbursement and non-members for a 25% reimbursement. For more information check out the APWA Web site.
Cancellation policy: If you are unable to attend or arrange for a substitute, you may obtain a refund minus the $20 administrative fee by contacting our registration department at least 3 business days prior to the program.
