Areas of Expertise: Alcohol and other drug issues, motivational interviewing, and group facilitation skills.

 

About the training:

On-site trainings range from two hours to day-long sessions and can include the following topics: skills for working with substance abusers including interviewing clients on their substance use, motivational interviewing techniques and group counseling skills.

Other topics that can be adapted to your agency's needs are: pharmacology of drugs of abuse, signs and symptoms of substance abuse, and screening and assessment instruments.

Who can benefit:

Human service professionals who work with people experiencing substance abuse problems. Clergy, social workers, teachers, medical personnel, and group home workers have benefited from these programs.

About this trainer:

Merrilee Pickett, MS, is a Certified Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Counselor, and is the instructor for the comprehensive UW-Madison Substance Abuse Certificate Program. She has trained hundreds of counselors and coordinates programs for substance abuse and mental health professionals. Merrilee has worked with substance abusers and their partners and children in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
