Description:

Learn how to deal with ethical dilemmas and how to make decisions that protect clients' rights and minimize risks to clinicians. Examine the boundaries in client-clinician relationships and discuss the importance of professional values and ethics. Explore models used for ethical decision-making. Special consideration is given to ethics in administration and supervision.

This online course provides an understanding of:

• The importance of professional values and ethics in human service practice
• Models of ethical decision-making
• The importance of professional boundaries
• Ethics useful for human service administration and supervision

Please note: This course qualifies for 16 hours of professional continuing education for social workers and meets the requirements for ethics and boundaries.

Course structure:

• Content is scheduled as weekly modules.
• Background readings, cases and exercises are provided.
• You access the course Web site at your convenience.
• Learners engage in a weekly asynchronous discussion forum.
• Approximately four hours per week is needed to successfully participate.

Your instructor:

Eric Weiner, MSW, PhD is a marriage and family therapist and mental health consultant with teaching experience as an adjunct professor for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee social work department.

Course access:

About one week prior to the start of the class, you are sent readings by surface mail. To ensure privacy online you receive an e-mail with Web site access information and a password. An orientation is available online.

Computer requirements to use Learn@UW online courses are as follows:

• A Web Browser (such as Internet Explore 5.0 higher, Netscape 4.7, 6 or higher, Mozilla, or Safari. Note: Netscape 7.0 is recommended for Mac users)

Credits:

Social Workers: The University of Wisconsin-Madison, Professional Development and Applied Studies, (PDAS), (provider number #1042) is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), (800-225-6880) through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. PDAS maintains responsibility for the program. WI, IA and MI Boards of Social Work recognize ACE programs. MN Board of Social Work CE Approval Number: 06-138. Counselors: PDAS is recognized by the National Board for Certified Counselors to offer continuing education for National Certified Counselors. PDAS adheres to NBCC continuing education guidelines (Provider #5990).

Please note: This is a continuing education course for professionals. It fulfills ongoing certification requirements for continuing education credits/hours, however it does not carry University of Wisconsin undergraduate or graduate credit.

Cancellation policy: If you are unable to participate in a group class or arrange for a substitute, you may obtain a refund minus the $20 administrative fee by contacting our registration department at least 3 business days prior to the program. If you cancel 3 business days or less before the program, or do not participate, you are responsible for the entire fee. To cancel or arrange for a substitute, please call 800-725-9692. No refund is given for cancellation of an Independent Study class. Exceptions to this policy will be determined by CPM program staff on a case-by-case basis.
