The Science Behind the Mind:
An update for mental health clinicians

Presented by Dr. Mays M.D., PhDPictures of the Brian

Keeping up to date on the latest science behind brain imaging, brain stimulation, neurochemistry, and genetics can be a challenge. Workshop leader David Mays, MD, PhD, will describe and explain some of the latest findings in basic and applied science that are driving research and leading to new treatments of the major mental disorders.

We will explore brain anatomy and function as revealed by functional MRI scans. Interested participants are encouraged to bring a laptop or other portable device loaded with BrainVoyager Brain Tutoral--  a free download on the Internet at www.brainvoyager.com . Approximately 30 minutes of class time will be spent using this program. Current brain stimulation techniques will be described, including transmagnetic stimulation and deep brain stimulation.

We will also look at genetics and the explosive field of epigenetics and how the behavior of our future grandchildren may be influenced by our lifestyle decisions today. We will see how genetic markers are providing clues for the etiology of our most puzzling disorders and hope for innovative treatments.

No biochemistry degree is needed - only an interest in the science behind the human mind and a willingness to put aside your old preconceptions of how the world works.

Optional Course Technology

Participants can supplement their experience at this exciting new in-person course by downloading the free “BrainVoyager Brain Tutor” software on their laptop computer or other devise (small app charges picture of a brainmay apply). This is NOT a requirement, but it will add to the learning experience.

The free software lets you interactively explore high-quality 3D head and brain models that have been created from MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans. The models can be rotated, moved, zoomed and morphed in real-time.

The one day workshop will utilize the “BrainVoyager Brain Tutor” software to explore the impact of neurons and microglia on the development of mental illness.

Technology Requirements
We will provide free internet access, as well as multiple electrical hook-ups at the on site training. However, it is important to download the free software prior to attending the course. Please note that the administrative privileges you have on a laptop, or the type of device you have, may limit your ability to affectively access and use the free software. However, you can fully participate in this workshop WITHOUT using the software.
