Answers

1. Do all of your classes meet on the UW-Madison campus?

Most, but not all of our classes meet on the UW-Madison campus at the Pyle Center located at 702 Langdon St. Other locations can include the Memorial Union and The Lowell Center, also located on Langdon St. Larger conferences are often times held at private Hotel and Conference Centers. Please check program descriptions for exact locations.

2. How do I get a department catalog?

Use our online form to request a catalog or join one of our mailing lists. You can also e-mail us at pdas@dcs.wisc.edu. Call, 608-262-1156 or 1-800-442-4617.

3. Are your classes for specific professionals only, or can the general public attend?

Most of our programs are intended for professional continuing education, but anyone can attend.

4. How can I be included on your mailing lists?

Use the mailing list form on this Web site or e-mail us at pdas@dcs.wisc.edu (be sure to tell us which program or subject area interests you) or call 608-262-1156 or 1-800-442-4617.

5. Who do I call if I have more questions about a specific program?

The coordinator and contact information for each topic area appears at the top of the Web page about that program or topic.

6. How can I confirm that I am really registered for a class?

Call the registration office directly at 608-265-3261 or 1-800-442-4617 and they will be happy to check on your registration.

7. If I have to cancel my registration, will I get a refund?

If you must cancel your registration and do so three business days prior to the program, you will receive a full refund minus the $20 administrative fee. If you cancel less than three business days prior to the program, or do not attend, you are responsible for the entire fee. Substitutions are welcome.

8. Do you offer any classes over the internet?

Yes! We currently offer a variety of different classes and more are being developed. Visit our online classes page for details.

9. Where can I park on the UW-Madison campus?

Parking options depend upon the location. If you are attending a program at the Pyle Center, Lowell Center or the Memorial Union, parking is available on an hourly basis at the nearby State St/Campus public parking ramp. Parking on surrounding streets is very limited. We recommend the public parking ramp; you pay when you leave and avoid the possibility of parking tickets! Parking permits are available through the Pyle Center.

10. Do you offer any certificate programs?

Yes, we offer the following certificate programs:

• Divorce Mediation Certificate Program
• Mental Health Care for the Older Adult
• The Public Works Supervisory Academy
• Substance Abuse Certificate Program
• The Wisconsin Certified Public Manager Program (CPM)

11. Are all of your programs available for Continuing Education Credits (CEUs)?

Yes, all of our programs offer CEUs. Many are approved for specific professional continuing education requirements, such as the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction equivalency clock hours.

12. What is a CEU? (Continuing Education Unit)

It is a national unit of measure of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. One CEU equals 10 hours of participation in qualified continuing education offerings. A five or six hour, one-day program equals .5 or .6 CEU.

13. Are your classes available for undergraduate or graduate credit?

Most of our programs offer Continuing Education Units (CEU) that are recognized for professional continuing education, not for completion of a specific degree such as a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. In addition, the University of Wisconsin, Department of Professional Development and Applied Studies is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association for Social Work Boards (ASWB) www.aasswb.org (1-800-225-6880) through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program.

14. Do you offer workshops that have CECH (continuing education contact hours) for certified health educators?

Yes, some of our Health Education workshops provide CECH for CHES.

15. What classes are you offering that can help me meet the continuing education requirement for WI social work license renewal?

Our department is approved by the Association of Social Work Boards as a provider of continuing education for social workers. We have many one and two day programs, several online programs and conferences that will help you meet your required continuing education hours.

We also offer programs that are approved for Continuing Education hours for Marriage and Family Therapist, Professional Counselors and Psychologists. We offer e-mail reminder services that will alert you, on a bimonthly basis, of programs that will fulfill your Continuing Education requirements.

16. Do you offer scholarships?

Occasionally, programs have scholarships available to help with registration fees. For other programs, special arrangements can be made to help participants or organizations unable to afford the entire fee. Contact the listed coordinator to learn about availability of financial assistance with registration fees.

17. What kinds of research is your faculty conducting?

Faculty members conduct applied research in a variety of fields. Click on Faculty and staff to learn more about our staff and their areas of expertise and research.

18. Does your department provide consultation services?

Yes! Several of our faculty and staff provide consultation services to agencies and organizations. Visit the on-site training and consultation page for more information and a list of programming areas.
