The passage of the constitutional amendment banning civil unions and gay marriage in Wisconsin aroused anger, despair, confusion, and helplessness—and a renewed determination to create a just community. Many schools witnessed an upsurge of homophobia, with LGBT youth targeted for harassment. Many workplaces saw employees experiencing high degrees of stress about the amendment’s impact; some businesses lost highly qualified employees who moved to states where their legal rights were assured. And many families and houses of worship were bitterly divided over this civil rights issue.
At the same time, allies stepped forward from all segments
of the community to form strong coalitions for
a fair Wisconsin. Family members discovered the truth
about their loved ones and embraced a more inclusive
notion of family and marriage. And a diversity of faith
communities rallied in the name of social justice.
Join this workshop to continue to explore how to
foster allyships for making our families, organizations,
and communities safe and welcoming for LGBT
people—for all people.
This workshop is intended to create a safe learning environment in which participants can engage in self reflection and dialogue with others about issues concerning homophobia. We'll begin by exploring how homophobia hurts everybody and examining individual and societal attitudes toward homosexuality and bisexuality. We'll discover how our actions (or inactions) may unwittingly support institutional homophobia. Finally, we'll learn how to become effective allies with one another and identify actions that create safe, inclusive environments.
| "Kathy is a great teacher. I learned more from this workshop than I had ever imagined." |
