Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Training of Trainers Certificate Program

Date: TBD

Many professionals who work with clients affected by prenatal alcohol exposure lack training to effectively identify, refer, and provide services for individuals and families affected by FASD. In addition, few agencies or communities offer local FASD training to address these important issues.

This certificate program provides up-to-date, science based information on FASD, as well as the skills, strategies and materials for medical and allied health professionals, human services providers, families, communities, administrators, policy makers, and others need to become FASD trainers.

This certificate program supplements other professional training, and does not certify a participant to provide substance abuse counseling and/or services to individuals affected by FASD. It is designed to provide pertinent information and skills to help prepare and provide FASD-related training and educational programs for a range of audiences.

NOTE: Participants who would like to learn more about FASD but do not want to become a certified trainer are welcome to attend the first three days of training (Monday-Wednesday).

About this program

Background

Alcohol use during pregnancy is a leading, preventable cause of birth defects and developmental disabilities. Despite increased awareness and education, women of childbearing age-including pregnant women- drink and binge drink (four or more drinks per occasion) at alarming rates. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders is the umbrella term used to describe the range of lifelong effects that can occur due to prenatal alcohol exposure including physical, cognitive, behavioral, and/or social deficits. Though it is not intended as a clinical diagnosis, the term represents the medical conditions associated with prenatal alcohol exposure, including fetal alcohol syndrome, partial fetal alcohol syndrome, alcohol related neurodevelopmental disorder, and alcohol related birth defects.

Comments from Past Participants

”I’ve been a public health nurse for 30 years and a lot has changed in the field of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in that time. I learned so much in this program I often say it was 'life changing'. I met wonderful, passionate people from all over the state, the country and the world! We share resources and continue to help each other with the trainings. I would HIGHLY recommend this training for any medical or allied health professional. The materials and support I received and continue to receive are invaluable. It has fueled my passion for this subject and I plan to continue to do talks on my own time because it is so rewarding to learn and share this information.”
