Most human service practitioners encounter substance abuse problems in the populations they serve. However, many feel ill-equipped to handle these issues. The University of WisconsinMadison Substance Abuse Certificate Program provides practical information and skills to help social workers, mental health providers, clergy, and other human service professionals make real differences in the lives of substance abusers.
"This series was excellent; well rounded, thorough and lots of information."
~ Roberta Beson-Crone, Technical Training Manager (more student comments)
The Substance Abuse Certificate Program supplements your professional clinical training. It is a comprehensive series of four 1-day courses and one 2-day course, totaling six days. Since the certificate program curriculum is designed to be taken in sequence with each course building on prior course content, we strongly recommend that you take the courses in sequence. However, except for Course 5, Skills for Working with Substance Abusers, you may opt to attend individual programs without working towards the certificate.

The Substance Abuse Certificate Program supplements professional clinical training. It does not certify you to counsel alcohol and other drug abuse clients; instead it provides pertinent information to help you respond more effectively to people with alcohol and other drug problems.
The Certificate Program also benefits those who are entering the substance abuse field. The Wisconsin Certification Board - the former credentialing body for alcohol and drug abuse counselors - endorsed the program for 36 hours. The Certificate Program maintains this endorsement through the credentialing transfer to the Department of Regulation and Licensing.
You have successfully completed the program after attending all five courses in their entirety and submitting two assignments. You then receive a certificate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

What are the requirements for completion?
You must attend the five courses in their entirety, read all the materials and complete two assignments.
The first assignment is experiential and includes a two-page paper. The final

work setting. You then receive a certificate which verifies successful completion
of the Substance Abuse Certificate Program from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Where and when are classes held?
All five courses are offered in the spring and fall on the beautiful University
of Wisconsin-Madison campus. Classes meet from 9 am to 4 pm. You can register
and pay on a course-by-course basis and take up to two years to complete the
Program. We recommend that COURSE l, Fundamentals of Substance Abuse, be taken
before the other four courses.
What organizations recognize the Program?
The program is endorsed by the Wisconsin Certification Board through the transition to the Department of Regulation and Licensing, the National Board
of Certified Counselors, the Department of Public Instruction, the Association
