According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) heroin is a highly addictive drug with numerous medical and social consequences for the user (e.g. HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, crime, violence, and disruptions in family, workplace, and educational environments) and society (e.g. billions of dollars in costs each year).

This workshop focuses heroin and other opiate drugs that are available on the street.

Substance abuse professionals, health and human services providers, educators, and others who need comprehensive information on drugs of abuse.

About the program:

Learn about the fundamentals of neurotransmission, which are key to understanding all substances of abuse. Understand how opioids affect the brain and the individuals who use them.

We cover terminology, medical use of opioids and treatment options, the short- and long-term effects of opioid use and abuse, signs and symptoms of abuse, signs and symptoms of withdrawal, and the latest fads and trends in opioid use. Where data is available, specific information is addressed regarding pediatric populations, women, and other groups.

BONUS: Upon completion of this course you will receive access to the Learn@UW portal for a presentation by instructor Tom Nelson on factors affecting the use, abuse and treatment of drugs of abuse. The segment supplements information provided at the workshop. Please note, this online learning tool will be available for a limited time and is only available to paid workshop participants.

Did you know:

According to the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), illicit drug use in the U.S. rose to its highest level in eight years.
The number of past-month heroin users aged 12 or older increased from 153,000 in 2007 to 213,000 in 2008 (NSDUH, 2008).
Teenagers report they have reasonably easy access to heroin, with 29.7 percent of 12th graders indicating that it is easy to obtain, and 12.6 percent of 8th graders indicating they can obtain heroin.
The availability of heroin is increasing in some areas, evidenced by high wholesale purity, low prices, increased levels of abuse, and elevated numbers of heroin-related overdoses and overdose deaths (U.S. Department of Justice, National Drug Threat Assessment 2010).
A number of Wisconsin counties reported an increase in heroin-related overdoses between 2008 and 2009, including Dane, Milwaukee, and Racine (DOJ).
Heroin use is on the rise, in part due to some prescription opioid users switching to heroin as they build up tolerance to prescription opioids, and in areas where heroin is less costly or more available than prescription opioids (DOJ).

About the instructor:

Tom Nelson, PharmD, RPh, is a drug information and substance abuse consultant for numerous state AODA treatment agencies and school districts. A registered pharmacist, he serves as pharmacy clinical coordinator at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he also directs the pharmacy residency program and investigation drug studies program. Tom's thoughtful and low-key style is well received by participants.
