What do substance abuse, pathological gambling, compulsive sexual behavior,
obsessive shopping, and Internet addiction have in common? They are public
health problems that involve behavior in that twilight boundary between
autonomy and loss of control. All addictions begin with a free choice. How can
such a disease be biologically determined? Yet it is increasingly clear that
concepts like motivation, salience, self-control, and craving reflect
biological systems, and the above behaviors may share a common etiology and
pathophysiology.
This new and fascinating program explores our biological understanding of the
commonly identified features of addiction – genetic loading, behavioral
vulnerabilities, salience, reward, withdrawal, relapse – and apply these
concepts to various behavioral addictions. You will learn about treatment
strategies and their results across the gamut of compulsive behavior.
Because comorbidity with mental and physical health problems is the rule, rather than the exception in those with addictive behaviors, you learn about the most common medical and emotional complications seen by mental health treaters in their addicted clients. Comorbidity and treatment of dual disorders requires communication, and trying to facilitate communication among different specialists is always a challenge, but crucial for a good outcome. This workshop ends with a discussion of strategies to make useful communication more likely.
