Frequently asked questions about: Travel Programs

Are the travel programs just for young college students?

No. The travel programs are offered as adult continuing education programs. Participant ages have ranged from 20-80.

Do I have to be a Wisconsin resident or graduate of UW—Madison to participate?

No. Participation is open to everyone interested and, in fact, overseas residents often join some of the international travel programs.

Can I receive university credit for my participation in the travel seminars?

Yes, if you participate in one of our Arts Study Abroad programs that have optional credits. Although ideal for K-12 teachers, anyone can travel in these programs and earn university credit through a custom designed curriculum. Are single rooms available and is there an additional fee? Do you match single travelers with others to save supplement costs?

Yes, all travel seminars offer single accommodations for a supplement that varies according to the hotel surcharges. When possible, participants wishing to share can be accommodated, but policy is different for different programs.

Can I make my own air arrangements (to use the carrier of my choice or frequent flyer miles) and perhaps arrive earlier than the group or stay longer?

Yes. Participants can make their own air arrangements but only after a guaranteed space has been confirmed. With advance planning almost all hotels will accept early arrivals or late departures, and in such cases the University is usually able to extend the group rate.

Can I join the seminar for part of the time if my own schedule does not allow full time participation?

Occasionally a client will participate in a seminar for part of the schedule, but planning and negotiating far in advance is required. Deadlines must be carefully observed to protect both the client and the University.

How much free time is allotted?

It depends on the program chosen. Some programs are highly structured while others are very flexible. But all programs have some designated free time.

How long has the University been offering these educational travel programs?

The first domestic travel study tour was offered in the summer of 1963. International seminars have been offered annually since 1968. University faculty and staff have taught and assisted other travel providers ever since. The current professional staff has been directing travel experiences since the early 1970s.

What kind/caliber of accommodations and meals should I expect?

Accommodations vary somewhat throughout the programs. All hotel rooms are double occupancy with a private bath. Some single rooms are available with a supplemental fee. Meals that are provided by the programs are substantial and healthy. Vegetarian or special diet meals are available upon request.

Can I put down a deposit and then pay the rest of the fees when we travel?

No. All fees must be paid in advance.
