Photography Classes – SOA 2008
Film Processing Information: One hour and overnight print film processing and prints from digital memory cards are available in Rhinelander. Locations and drop-off/pick up times will be included in the supply lists for each class.
Computer lab: There will be a Photoshop/Publisher lab available for students who are experienced in these areas, but please be aware that there will be no formal instruction in this lab.
Saving your work:
If you need to save work for any of your classes, bring a USB key/flashdrive, a 3.5 floppy disk, or CDs. CD burners are available in the lab. All digital photographers are asked to bring two memory cards and an extra battery for their cameras.
Basic Photoshop Elements (C20) - Class is full

Photoshop Elements has become a program of choice for many people who are looking for basic and economical solutions to digital photography enhancements. Through a series of in-class assignments, you will learn to crop, change exposures, remove dust and scratches, repair flaws, color balance your images, and experiment with cloning. This entry-level course is for students who have basic computer skills, and little, or no prior knowledge of digital enhancement. All images and reference hand-outs will be provided. Bring a USB key or disc for storing in-class assignments. All digital photographers are asked to bring two memory cards and an extra battery for their cameras.
Instructor Bio:
Nancy Koberle-O'Connell is an award-winning artist with more than 25 years' experience in graphic design. She is currently senior artist in the Division of Continuing Studies at UW-Madison where she works extensively with Photoshop. Her portfolio includes work for American Girl and several Fortune 500 companies.

This class will train participants to discover and tell the story of a community using historic downtown Rhinelander as the canvass. Class time will include lecture, critique and shooting photos of the historic downtown of Rhinelander so participants can return to tell the story of their own communities through photography. This class will be a fun, learning experience that will sharpen your "photographer's eye." Photographs taken by students will be used by the Downtown Rhinelander Association and will credit the photographer. All digital photographers are asked to bring two memory cards and an extra battery for their cameras.
Instructor Bio:
Dennis McGill's career in photography began in 1970 taking photos of
animals at livestock shows and state fairs for a large feed company in
Iowa.
A graduate from the UW-Eau Claire Journalism Department, where he
assisted in the teaching of photography and black and white darkroom,
Dennis owned and operated a combination camera store and portrait studio
in Rhinelander from 1977 until his retirement in 1999.

Digital Photo Management is more than instruction on the use of your digital camera; it takes it to the next step by learning a photographic workflow that will make your digital photos look their best. In this class we will take pictures and work with the digital “negative” to tone the photos in a quick, easy and controlled way. All digital photographers are asked to bring two memory cards and an extra battery for their cameras.
Instructor Bio:
Steve Apps has worked for 23 years as a photojournalist, including the past 11 covering the
Green Bay Packers for the Wisconsin State Journal. He also enjoys photographing on his own time, documenting Wisconsin. His work appears in publications around the country and has received awards from the National Press Photographers Association, Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the Wisconsin Press Photographers Association.

While digital photography has made recording images easier than ever, you still need to know what makes a good photograph. In this class we’ll learn how to use your camera, the rules of good photography, takes lots of pictures, and critique our work in a positive learning atmosphere. We'll also look at all those little buttons on your digital camera and figure out what they do, and when to use them. All digital photographers are asked to bring two memory cards and an extra battery for their cameras.
