Plan your creative escape!

Director Lynn Tarnoff discusses this year’s School of the Arts and highlights many of the exciting changes—new and enhanced classes, yoga twice each day, and the return of midday forum— with Newswatch 12’s Kira Lynne in Rhinelander.

For 49 years, more than 250 people have gathered in northern Wisconsin for a week of study, performance, exhibits, and other creative activities. Every year has brought with it new participants, classes, and experiences. This year is no different. In addition to new subject areas, we’re offering more than 40 new or enhanced classes. And, even more important, we now offer one-, two-, and five-day programs! It’s now even easier (and less expensive) to explore a new interest or rediscover an old hobby.

Other things haven’t changed, of course. Many of our most popular instructors and classes have returned for another year. We’re back at the newly refurbished James Williams Middle School—although we’ve grown so much that three art classes will be held at nearby Rhinelander High School (details in class listings). And you can still count on a fulfilling, invigorating experience; dedicated instructors; engaging fellow students; and a week to last a lifetime.

Registration is now open for the 2012 School of the Arts at Rhinelander, July 22-July 27.

Program Areas

Art and Folk Art: Try a new medium, or indulge a lifelong passion-our instructors provide the experience, instruction, and feedback to help you bring your vision to life. Skill levels for courses range from beginner to advanced; check the course listing for details. In general, participants provide their own supplies for art workshops. However, some courses have a nominal fee for additional materials that are provided by the instructor. This fee is payable to the instructor on site on the first day of class.

Digital Media: Create a new masterpiece with your camera, or turn an ordinary picture into one. Our digital media classes can help everyone from beginning to seasoned photographers use lighting, exposure, composition, and computer magic to bring their images to life. Bring a USB flash drive or CD to save any work done in your class.

Food and Fitness: Whether you just want to cook and eat healthier, or you want to live a healthier life all around, we offer classes that will help you find your way. Supply lists are available along with class descriptions on the food and fitness page.

Mind/Body/Spirit: Help your creativity flow at the School of the Arts and in your daily life by strengthening your mind/body/spirit connection. Learn new techniques for relaxation, stress relief, and focus in the beautiful Northwoods. Recommended attire: flat or low-heeled comfortable shoes (leather or soft soles) and clothing suitable for floor movement, exercise, and relaxation classes.

Music: At the School of the Arts Music classes, discover what moves you and helps you move others. Take the stage to perform for the first time in your life, or become more proficient vocally or on an instrument you’ve played for years.

Writing: Taught by some of the area’s most prolific writers, these classes help beginning writers find their voice, intermediate writers hone their craft, and experienced writers reach new levels of excellence. Skill levels for courses range from beginner to advanced; check the course listing for details.
