Helen Klebesadel is an experienced artist, teacher, and mentor. She was formerly an associate professor of art and gender studies at Lawrence University. Her artworks have been exhibited nationally and internationally. Helen has been invited to offer workshops from Texas to Alaska and regularly teaches in Wisconsin. She offers watercolor, drawing, creativity, and career development in face-to-face workshops and through distance learning. Online art course: Drawing Landscape

This noncredit web-based art course offers a unique approach to landscape drawing that will interest artists of every level of experience. Study techniques to help you draw what you see and feel about a particular scene. The four units of the course focus on these aspects of landscape:

Viewpoint: where you are standing relative to the scene
Space: what is important about the space you see
Features: how do you depict the trees, land formations, sky and water that affect the scene
Personal landscapes: whether real or imagined, drawing landscape is a personal matter.

Your work in each area leads you to two activities. A drawing assignment gives you the opportunity to explore each new technique. A brief written observation will help you gain further insight through reflection on your drawing experience. The instructor will provide written comments on both your drawing and your observations.

Some drawing experience is recommended, but not required. Basic concepts and techniques are covered in the Basic Drawing Resource built into the course.

At the end of the course you will have created four polished pieces as a formal portfolio that presents your best work. This final portfolio also gives you the opportunity to look at your drawings over the entire course and to receive feedback from your instructor over your work as a whole.

The easy-to-use course web site includes links to some of the finest landscape drawings in major museums, original landscape drawings by the instructor demonstrating techniques, and useful online resources.

How it works

You can start anytime, and there are no required hours to log on. It's all done with one-on-one correspondence with the instructor using email. You can read and print course materials in the course web site, which you can access at your leisure with a password that we will give you. Because of the one-on-one nature of our workshops, you'll find them an excellent "coaching" or mentoring situation that will keep you going. And if you want to just work on your own, that's fine too. We're also here throughout the year if you have questions.
