The Madison Early Music Festival and Workshop, which recently celebrated its tenth season, takes place one week each July. The Festival brings nationally and internationally renowned performers to Madison to perform and to teach workshop classes, providing listening and learning opportunities for everyone.

a harpsichord being playedThe 2010 Festival and Workshop is titled England: Merry & Musical before Elizabeth. From Anglo-Saxon bards to choristers of the Chapel Royal, from Dunstable to Taverner and Tallis, England enjoyed a rich musical culture long before Queen Elizabeth ascended the throne. Our exploration will carry us from the 12th century through the reign of “Fair Oriana,” with songs of love and battle, works from the golden age of English church music, and instrumental music for court life and countryside all represented in MEMF’s celebration of this delightful repertoire.  The annual All-Festival Concert will include choral pieces and consorts of strings and wind instrument performing repertoire by such composers as Robert Carver, Orlando Gibbons, John Taverner, Thomas Tallis, and William Byrd.

The 2010 concert series will feature an exciting array of artists and ensembles:

July 10:  Parthenia, A Consort of Viols (with soprano Julianne Baird)
July 11:  The King’s Noyse
July 12:  Hesperus: The Robin Hood Project (silent film accompanied by live music)
July 13:  LIBER: Ensemble for Early Music
July 15:  MEMF Faculty Concert
July 16:  Benjamin Bagby: Beowulf
July 17:  All-Festival Concert
