The University of Wisconsin–Madison is pleased to announce the 13th annual Madison Early Music Festival and Workshop. In addition to a seven-event Festival Concert Series, lectures and workshop classes provide opportunities to learn and practice instrumental and vocal skills, become familiar with historical performance practices and repertoire, learn about the featured music through the lenses of history and culture, and perform with other participants alongside faculty artists.
In 2012 the Madison Early Music Festival wraps up its two-year perspective on early music of the New World, traveling to North America after its exploration of South America and Mexico. During this year of the U.S. Presidential election we look back to the early music of the United States, from the early Colonists in the 1600's, the Revolutionary era, all the way to the Civil War. Musical compositions brought to the United States and Canada from Europe, musical discoveries from the library of Thomas Jefferson, the traditions of the New England Singing School of William Billings, the Moravian Loud Bands, and an exploration of music from Cape Breton and Acadia will provide a rich tapestry of music from North America.
