Conversational German in Madison

  • Beginning 1
  • Beginning 2
  • Beginning 3
  • Intermediate

German class in progressOur ever-popular instructor Rose Stephenson teaches Beginning 1 through Beginning 3. Rose earned her MA in German from the renowned language-teaching program at Middlebury College and also lived in Germany for many years. Her experience includes more than ten years of teaching evening German courses at UW-Madison.

Our Intermediate course, offered in fall and spring, is designed so experienced speakers of German may take the course multiple times to continually improve their speaking and listening skills and expand their knowledge of German culture. Instructor Karen Jankowsky has a PhD in German literature, has studied in Tubingen, Berlin, and Paris, and has extensive teaching experience.

All of our courses are oriented toward improving conversational skills to prepare you for real situations such as travel in Germany. The entire program uses the textbook set Themen neu, which is available for preview and purchase on campus in the University Bookstore's lower level, in the "Outreach" section. The classes Beginning 1 through Beginning 3 take you through Volume 1, and the Intermediate course draws from Volume 2. You can also visit the textbook publisher's Web site, although it is entirely in German.
