Certify that you meet your UW-Madison graduate program's requirement for reading knowledge of French by taking this exam. The French for Reading Knowledge Exam is offered in April or May, August, and November or December. Select a translation text and register one month before the exam. Register online or by phone at 608-262-2451, or in person at 139 Pyle Center. You must also contact your academic department and fill out an approval form before taking the exam.
You are given two hours to read and translate the exam, which has three parts. Part one is short paragraphs, part two is sentences, and part three is a short excerpt from your selected translation text. You are permitted to use a French-English dictionary which you must provide. Handwritten notes about French grammar written in the dictionary are permissible, but additional materials are not.
Your reading ability is assessed by how much of the exam you translate accurately and coherently. Your exam will be rated at one of the following levels:
Please contact your academic department for the exact level you need to demonstrate. Each UW-Madison graduate program determines its own standards for reading knowledge requirements. After you have taken the exam, please contact us to receive your results. When you pass your department’s requirements, we will automatically notify your department of your exam result. If you must re-take the exam, you will need to register and pay for a new exam.

We recommend that you practice writing timed translations in advance. Feel free to use the above sample exam, as well as working through self-timed translations of additional scholarly articles in French from your own field of research. Memorial Library has a vast collection of French language scholarly publications.
