Types of classroom programsLanguage and culture courses: In these informal, conversation-oriented courses, participants learn to understand and communicate in a foreign language and explore the culture of the countries in which the language is spoken. Learn about regions, festivals, food, music, and the people and their attitudes and customs. These courses also provide the foreign-language speaking and reading skills needed in everyday life. They are especially useful to anyone planning to travel in foreign countries and may serve as a basis for more advanced study. Course titles are listed below. You will find descriptions of current classes and workshops in the UW-Madison Continuing Studies catalog. Reading knowledge:These courses are primarily for graduate students who need to demonstrate reading competency in a foreign language as a requirement for a graduate degree. Enrollment is also open to other interested people. The courses provide students with the minimum essentials for reading independently in their fields; they also can serve as a review for those who have already had some contact with the language.
