Examination Procedures for Courses in Mathematics and Statistics

Examinations in Independent Learning courses must be proctored just as they would be for a course taken on campus. Such supervised examinations ensure that all academic conduct regulations have been met, that all students face the same requirements, and that all credits and grades received by the student are acceptable to employers and academic Institutions.

If you live in the Madison area, plan to take your examination at the Learning Innovations Exam Office, University Research Park, 505 Rosa Road, Suite 200, Madison, WI 53719; 877-UW-LEARN or 262-2011. If you cannot come to Madison, you may take your examination at a more convenient location. In that case, you are responsible for finding a qualified proctor who is willing to accept the responsibilities as stated below. A designated member of the Mathematics Program must approve your proctor.

A qualified proctor normally is expected to have some professional experience as a teacher at the high-school level or above or to be employed as a proctor in a testing center at an academic institution. Students enrolled at a high school or college are expected to arrange for a proctor on the staff of that institution. A certified librarian in a supervisory position may also serve as a proctor. Certain exceptions are made routinely: students on active duty in the armed forces may nominate a base or unit education officer as proctor; prison inmates may turn to an official of the jail or penitentiary. Academic professionals are accustomed to this kind of request, and your nominee need not even be someone you know before making the request. A proctor, however, cannot be related to you and should not be a close friend. An individual who personally supervises you at work or who is your coach or who has been your tutor will not usually be approved.

If you are unable to arrange for a proctor who meets our stated criteria, we may be able to make special arrangements. Contact:

or e-mail the Director of Mathematics. If you have a disability and need reasonable accommodation to take your exam (such as increased time or reader-services), please let Learning Innovations know promptly so that they can make appropriate arrangements.

A proctor will be expected to:

When you are ready to take an examination, fill out and send us the Request for Supervised Examination form from your study guide, nominating in it a qualified proctor as described above. If your proctor is approved, the examination will be sent only to the proctor's place of professional employment, never to a home address. You should notify the proctor that he or she will be receiving the materials and should arrange with the proctor for a time to take the exam. The examination must be taken at the proctor's place of professional employment under his or her personal supervision.
