Sandra Grieger-Block (608) 850-5094"And Every Cover is a Door" - mixed media ""The bookshop has a thousand books, all colors, hues and tinges, and every cover is a door that moves on magic hinges." This childhood poem provided the title of this painting that is a tribute to my childhood library and my love of books. I haven't quite figured out what style this is but I call it "Memory Palaces" which is the name of a mnemonic tool to visually organize and retain memories. I wanted to portray a double viewpoint of oth the actual library building and my memories so I "rolled up the edge" of the picture of the library and moved some of the actual visual memories from my mind onto the canvas. The memories portrayed are merely symbols of larger concepts involving libraries and books and include a photo of me on the first day I took home an armload of books and understood the concept of the public library, my first and current library cards that are used to access knowledge, the incredible power tool (pencil and date stamp) the librarians used to check-out and control the books, and checkout cards for books over my life that had significance in changing my way of thinking. My surprise was finding out how universal these memories were and that I was painting "Memory Palaces" of the childhood libraries and books of many of my generation. The painting is primarily watercolor on watercolor canvas with Nexus colored pens for detail and various colors of ground Yarka Sauce dusted on with a brush to give a feeling of brick, stone, age and memory (somewhat like the carbon dust method used in scientific illustration)"
