Drawing and painting are the foundation skills of making art. These classes provide a range of experiences in the basic mediums for beginning and intermediate students. Most of the classes are held at the UW-Madison Humanities Building, home of the Department of Art. Excellent teachers will help you nurture your Self, develop your creativity and build your art skills. Art fundamentals: drawing, painting, and composition
Deepen your artistic skill in this seven-week class as you explore line, texture, space, value, shape, form, and color. Develop your artistic eye for drawing, painting, and composition by exploring principles of balance rhythm, proportion, and variety. Experiment with drawing materials, water-based paint, color mixing, and designs guided by an experienced instructor. Enjoy in-class lectures, slide shows, demonstrations, and discussions.
Instructor: Julia Taylor (MA, National Fine Arts Academy, Ukraine; MFA, UW-Madison) is trained in classic and contemporary graphic arts. She has taught drawing, printing, and design internationally and at UW-Madison and she exhibits internationally.

Chinese brush painting workshop
Enjoy a one-day Chinese brush painting workshop learning to paint flowers and some insects. Learn both ancient and modern brush painting techniques as well as calligraphy for each subject: spider chrysanthemum with bird, plum blossom, lotus, orchid, and bees and dragonflies. Instructor demonstrations and class discussions highlight each subject area.
Instructor: Stella Dobbins NSW (MA, Univ. of Houston–Clear Lake) is an artist and art historian who exhibits her artwork nationwide and is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society.

Drawing: basic
Draw a different subject at each session of this four-week class. The instructor takes an easy-going approach to help you develop skills, starting with demonstrations and moving on to immediate application exercises and generous one-on-one attention. Learn how to create the illusion of depth, volume, and texture. Can be taken concurrently with the afternoon class Drawing: Intermediate. Free parking.

Drawing: intermediate
Learn to use drawing media to express yourself as you explore pencil, charcoal, and silverpoint in this four-week class. Use photographs and observation to practice the art of seeing. Select your own subjects and work at your own pace. Expect classroom discussion, studio time, and one-on-one interaction with your instructor. Can be taken concurrently with the morning class Drawing: Basic. Free parking.

Figurative oil painting studio
In this 11-week class you paint or draw from a live model in a relaxed studio setting without instruction. The model holds one pose for three hours (with breaks), allowing you to hone in and develop your figurative painting skills. Oils, acrylics, and drawing media welcome.
Coordinator:
Rich Corzatt (BA, Ripon College), a full-time designer in Madison and a member of Chicago’s Palette and Chisel Club, devotes himself to advancing as a figurative oil painter.

Figure drawing studio: Wednesdays
Draw from the model for 11 weeks in a non-stressful environment. Since there is no instruction you may proceed at your own pace, in your own way. Background music adds to the creative mood. Warmup gestures, 10- to 40-minute poses, and 30- to 60-minute poses.
Coordinator

Life drawing: beginning
This five-week course covers various techniques to draw one of the most challenging and rewarding subjects: the human form. Continue the grand tradition of drawing from a model, using pencil, pen, and charcoal. Learn various techniques to properly see and draw the figure. Exercises range from 30-second gesture drawings to developed charcoal compositions. Life drawing: intermediate
Advance your figure-drawing skills in this self-directed five-week studio class for artists with experience in life drawing. Individualized instruction and group critiques encourage you to hone your skills and develop personal style. Prerequisite: some life-drawing experience.

Painting workshop: color for painters
Explore the beautiful complexities and chameleon properties of color specifically relevant to painting. In this four-week class, focused exercises explore color mixing, tonality, composition and harmony. Beginners: build a firm foundation in color as you begin the journey into painting. Intermediate and advanced students: deepend your understanding of color, refine your vision and skills, and explore color issues relevant to individual style. Choose oil, acrylic, or watercolor.
Instructor: Katherine Rosing (MFA, Northern Illinois Univ.) has taught painting, drawing, color theory, watercolor, and design for 15 years at colleges in Illinois and Wisconsin. Her work is exhibited across the U.S. and has been shown in China, Germany, and Japan.

Guest artist series: pastel interpretations (soft pastel)
A very adaptable medium, soft pastel is perfect for learning different painting techniques. In this studio workshop you do several different interpretations from the same photographic reference. Each interpretation is quite unique; consequently you learn which styles and techniques work best for your own artistic vision. We send you a supply list when you register; we provide all paper.
Instructor: Kay Brathol-Hostvet (BFA, UW-Stout) has taught art for five years. In her first year of making art, her landscapes won Wisconsin Regional Art Program awards.

Plein-air and landscape painting
Discover the beauty of plein-air (outside) and landscape painting in this nine-week class. We focus on capturing the light, atmosphere, texture, color, and perspective relationships of city/landscapes with water-based oil or acrylic paints. On bad-weather days we paint from photo references at a studio. Must be able to walk/travel to different Madison locations.
Instructor:

Realist painting studio
Focus on the techniques used to create realist paintings in this nine-week class. Use water-based oil or acrylic paints to develop representational paintings that are inspired from either photo references or still-life objects. Grow as an artist through studio experience, personalized instruction, and critiques.

Studio painting at Green Lake
Join other painters to immerse yourself in a week of painting at the beautiful Green Lake Conference Center. Participate in critiques, reflections, and demonstrations on various painting and drawing topics and techniques under the guidance of experienced instructors. Optional lodging/meal plan is available through the Conference Center. And Susan Farmer-Tiefenthaler, professor emeritus in the Division of Continuing Studies, has taught drawing and painting to people of all ages and has led arts education workshops for professionals. Traveling with watercolor
Armed with a watercolor sketchbook, several tubes of color and a few other essential tools in your backpack, you can do watercolor in any place you care to travel. In this five-week class, you learn how to capture that memorable scene or person. Learn to complete a watercolor sketch in record time, with fast-wash and brush techniques, while giving you a fresh look at texture, transparency, and the sparkle of white paper.

Nancy Macgregor (BFA, Layton School of Art, Milwaukee) worked in advertising art and TV production in Chicago, then opened her own studio. She has taught various media and mounted art exhibitions for students and herself.
