Guest Auditors
Non-degree students at UW-Madison fall into two groups:
- Guest auditors—If you are not currently enrolled in a UW-Madison degree program, but want to attend a credit class without earning credits, apply as a Guest auditor. Guest students audit regular UW-Madison courses at a reduced fee.
NOTE: If you are 60+ years of age and a Wisconsin resident, apply as a Senior Guest auditor and audit classes for free. - University Specials—If you are not currently enrolled in a UW-Madison degree program, but you want to take UW-Madison credit courses for credit, apply as a University Special.
About auditing a class
Auditing is defined as sitting in on a lecture course and not actively participating. Class assignments and exams are not required, although regular attendance is expected. The audit opportunity is available for lecture courses with the instructor's approval. Classes typically not available to audit (call 608-263-6960 for clarification) are:
- physical education activity classes
- conversational languages
- studio and performing arts
- writing, math, computer, and lab courses
- courses ending from -90 to -99
Audited courses are listed on a student's official UW-Madison transcript with "AU" in place of number of credits and either "S" (satisfactory) or "NR" (no report) listed for the "grade." Prior to enrolling, Guest auditors discuss with the instructor the standard for earning an "S" in the particular course. With the instructor's authorization, Guests enroll the first day of the term.
