Mabel Smith Memorial Scholarship Wisconsin Women of Color Network, Inc., Scholarship Information


The Mabel Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund was established on March 31, 1990. It was created to honor the memory of and recognize the outstanding contributions of Mabel Smith. Mabel was a founding member of the Wisconsin Minority Women's Network, Inc. and was renowned for her dedication and commitment to helping people.

The Mabel Smith Memorial Scholarship provides financial assistance to high school graduates of color who are continuing their education at the vocational, technical or community college level.

To apply, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a high school or GED-equivalent graduating senior

  2. Be a member of one of the following ethnic groups:

    • African American

    • American Indian

    • Asian

    • Hispanic

    • Biracial

  3. Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or above on a 4 point scale, or equivalent

  4. Reside in Madison, Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, or Beloit

  5. Demonstrate financial need

The following materials are required to apply:

  1. Application form

  2. Three letters of recommendation MUST accompany application form. Letters of recommendation may be written by an instructor, guidance counselor or an individual who can attest to your educational abilities.

  3. Applicant's high school transcript from the end of the first semester of your senior year MUST accompany the application form.
    GED applicants MUST submit a copy of their certificate of completion.

  4. A black and white photo will be required if you are granted an award.

Application deadline: varies in February, applications must be postmarked before the deadline.
