Karen Y. Wells Scholarships

Sponsored by the Wendell Bryant Foundation

The Wendell Bryant Foundation, Inc. was established in March 2003. Wendell Bryant is a former University of Wisconsin All-American football player who currently plays in the NFL as a member of the Arizona Cardinals. The purpose of the foundation is to provide philanthropic support to nonprofit organizations providing community based support services that address the immediate need of at-risk urban and minority youth. The foundation is sponsoring five scholarships in the name of Wendell’s mother, Karen Wells. These scholarships will be awarded this spring to single parents, like Karen Wells, who embrace educational excellence and a commitment to continuing their education.

This award provides $1000-$2000 in funding support per academic year for:

Single parents enrolled in at least 9 undergraduate credits or 6 graduate (3 dissertator) credits each semester. Students must be enrolled for these minimum credit loads to receive scholarship funds.

Eligibility

This application will enable you to be considered for The Karen Y. Wells Scholarships, if eligible. All applicants must:

  1. be a single parent, head of household (or primary economic supporter)
  2. be either recently admitted to an accredited educational institution or continuing in good academic standing
  3. show proof of financial need
  4. be a U.S. citizen, eligible non-citizen, or permanent resident
  5. show evidence of probable academic success

The selection committee may request an interview. Selection will be based on an academic transcript, the applicant's latest income tax statement, a detailed statement of goals and purpose and a letter of support.

Your completed application should include:

  1. completed scholarship application form
  2. a typed personal essay/statement of goals and purpose (up to 3 pages double-spaced) outlining:
--your reasons for selecting your major/degree program
    --your academic and career goals
--your family, campus and/or community involvement
--the challenges and opportunities you face as a single parent student
  3. a letter of support from a representative of your school faculty, staff, or an official school representative, or a community group that is familiar with your school/community activities outside the classroom.
  4. a copy of your complete transcript to date (an unofficial or campus copy is acceptable)
  5. a copy of your 2003 tax return. If you were not required to file a return, please explain your situation on the reverse side of the application form.

Application deadline: April 15, 2004

Selection

Your scholarship application will not be considered complete unless all of the above materials are submitted by the deadline. The Scholarship Committee will not review incomplete applications. Priority will be given to first-time scholarship applicants. In fairness to all single parent applicants, a change in marital status of an award recipient will affect an award decision. All applicants will be notified of a decision by May 15, 2004.
