Can we help you with educational and career planning?

The Adult and Student Services Center (ASSC) provides career and educational counseling for community adults. If you have thought about changing careers or returning to school but aren't sure where to start, we may be able to help. Explore your options with a career and educational counselor or advisor. This resource is available for anybody interested in personal or professional development; you don't need to be a graduate of the University of Wisconsin to use our services.

What we can do for you

  • Career counseling and planning for adults in Madison and the surrounding area
  • Educational planning for adults considering a return to school

Our staff can help you at any stage of the career and educational planning process including formal and informal self-assessment, goal setting, decision-making, exploring resources, and the process of returning to school (if applicable for you).

You will work with your counselor or advisor to determine the best path for you; the length of the career planning process varies for everyone.

NOTE: Students enrolled at UW-Madison usually receive career services from the career center associated with their school or college. We are not a placement service and can’t review resumes.

Make an appointment

About appointments

  • Usually it is possible to get an appointment in two to three weeks (Tuesday evening appointments book fast so there may be a longer wait)
  • Any length up to one hour
  • Free of charge (we do charge for formal assessments and workshops)
  • Your information remains confidential

To make an appointment, please call 608-263-6960. We will ask you:

  • Your name and phone number
  • If you will need parking—some reserved parking may be available but you may want to consider alternate modes of transportation
  • Your e-mail address so we can send you directions and parking instructions

Plan to arrive about 10-15 minutes early for your first appointment to complete a brief intake form to make the best use of your appointment time.

What to bring

You don’t need to bring anything but the following items are helpful if you have them:

  • Results from previous career assessments
  • Resume (we don’t review resumes but they can be helpful to see your work history)
  • Transcripts if planning a return to school (we don’t do formal transcript evaluations but they can help us guide you in your decision to return to school)

Canceling or missing appointments

Keeping appointments and being on time is part of the personal commitment to counseling you must make. If you must cancel, please contact us as far in advance as possible (608-263-6960). Clients who consistently do not show up for scheduled appointments cannot be guaranteed future appointments. Because it is not usually beneficial to engage in shortened sessions, you may need to reschedule your appointment if you are late.
