FAQs
for high school students
Where can I find my campus ID number?
Your campus ID number is printed on the bottom left-hand corner of your admission letter. It is also listed on the Enrollment Invitation e-mail you receive from the Registrar’s Office. If you can’t find it anywhere, STUDENTS need to contact the advisor:
- Jane Schimmel; 608-262-2862;jschimmel@dcs.wisc.edu
- Moira Kelley; 608-263-7136; mkelley@dcs.wisc.edu (backup advisor)
What is a NetID and how does it differ from my campus ID?
You will need to use your campus ID to activate your NetID via My UW (see instructions received with your admission letter or at orientation). Your NetID is alphabetic (usually your first & middle initials and last name ie: jkrowling). Your campus ID is a 10-digit number, in most cases starting with the number nine (9).
I tried to enroll in my preferred class but received an error message saying the class is closed. What do I do now?
FIRST I recommend continue trying to enroll via My UW. You never know when someone will drop a class. Next, contact the department to see if they have a waiting list or if they have any recommendations. You may need to show up the first day of class and talk with the professor. Remember that priority is given to degree-seeking students and you may not be able to get into the class of your choice. But do keep trying to enroll because you never know when someone will drop a class.
I tried to enroll in my preferred class but received an error message saying I need permission to get into the class. Can you give me permission?
Only the department can give permission. You will need to contact the department and if they are able to grant permission they will need your campus ID number in order to enter a permission. You will still need to enroll in the class after the permission is entered.
How do I find phone numbers for the departments?
Department phone numbers are listed at the online Schedule of Classes (formerly called the Timetable) when you click on the “departments” link.
I’m having trouble with my class. Whom do I contact?
Talk with your professor and/or teaching assistant (TA). They may have suggestions to help you with class materials. Also call or email the advisor.
Why didn’t I receive my final grade in the mail?
The UW-Madison does not mail out grades. You can check your grade using the Student Center at My UW.
How do I get a transcript mailed to other colleges and universities?
Visit the Registrar’s home page for information on obtaining transcripts:
Is my grade point average (GPA) for courses taken as a Special student calculated on my UW-Madison transcript?
A cumulative GPA is not calculated for Special students although grades for each course you take are reported on your official UW-Madison transcript. There is one exception: If you are a Special student who later becomes an undergraduate degree student earning your first UW-Madison undergraduate degree, then any grades earned on credits which transfer in as part of your undergraduate degree program will be calculated in your final UW-Madison undergraduate degree GPA. (This is a common situation for high school students taking courses prior to entry into a degree program at UW-Madison.) If you are not in this specific situation, however, then any grades earned on credits taken as a Special student will not be calculated in a cumulative grade point average. Grades earned as a Special student will also not change a previous cumulative undergraduate or graduate GPA earned while at UW-Madison, even if you are repeating a class.
