You may have many reasons for learning a language: for travel, for business, to read favorite works of literature in the original, to enhance your understanding of world affairs, or to converse with new friends and colleagues. The Division of Continuing Studies offers a wide range of classes to meet these goals, including language and culture classes in Arabic, Chinese Mandarin, French, German, Irish, Italian, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, and Spanish; business-language courses and business Spanish certificate; and reading-knowledge classes in French, German, and Spanish. French language and culture: beginning 1

Learn to communicate in French in various social and cultural situations. Taught in an informal and relaxed atmosphere, this class develops skills needed by travelers and others who want to learn about French language and culture. Class topics encourage an appreciation for the richness of French and Francophone cultures. No prerequisites.

READING
French for reading knowledge

This course provides a concise overview of grammar, as well as reading and translation practice, for graduate students and others who wish to read French. It has successfully prepared numerous participants to do research in their fields and for the French Reading Knowledge Exam (included in the fee). Individual meetings with the instructor provide further support.

READING

German for reading knowledge

Learn to read German for purposes such as graduate school requirements or genealogical research. This class follows a complete course of grammar study, including lively in-class translation practice, and has successfully prepared many students for the German Reading Knowledge Exam.
