Note: Courses in this section welcome teens and adults. Please wear attire suitable for movement in these classes. African danceIn this course you are introduced to two or three rhythms from Mali and Guinea, West Africa. During each class we break down specific dance steps and slowly build them into a simple choreography. This is a great opportunity to release stress from your body and have fun! Experienced drummers bring energetic and uplifting music to the classroom. Students of all experience levels welcome. Focus on rhythm and posture as you explore energetic light/hop and heavy/percussive dances in modern and more traditional styles. Instructor: Heidi Hakseth Kundalini yogaKundalini yoga, also called the yoga of awareness, offers a powerful technique for relaxation, fitness, and spiritual development. It uses stretching, flexing, twisting, balancing, breathing, deep relaxation, and meditation. Benefits include enhanced physical and mental flexibility and balance, reduced stress, and more focused energy. Instructor: Lorene Ludy Latin dance/salsaLearn energetic, exciting, and passionate Latin dances like the rumba, cha cha, and salsa. In this class, perfect for beginners and experienced dancers alike, we cover turns, spins, style, and common basic patterns for several Latin dances, as well as challenges in balance, speed, flexibility, body awareness, and expression for the more advanced dancer. No dance experience required or expected. No partner necessary. Instructor: D. Francis Dieringer Modern dance: beginningThis class explores the Erick Hawkins technique to deepen and broaden your physical skills. Focus on generating movement from the center of the body as you learn and practice beginning-level dance movements and longer phrases. We take time for each student to explore their own physical patterns, with a goal of transcending boundaries. Bare feet. Instructor: Georgia Corner Modern dance technique: intermediate/advancedThis special workshop, taught by guest Judith Moss, is loosely based on Cunningham technique. We focus on changes in timing, rhythm, and dynamics through the exploration of weight and the juxtaposition of slow and quick movement. Bare feet. Instructor: Judith Moss Pilates conditioningIn this introductory class you learn the body conditioning technique that focuses on strength, flexibility, breath, and postural alignment by emphasizing kinesthetic (mind/body) awareness, uniform development of the body, and using core abdominal strength to support movement. Please bring a towel or mat to work on. Instructor: Kecia Doyle Greene T’ai chiT’ai chi ch’uan is an ancient form of Chinese exercise. Quiet, supple movements are performed in a calm and peaceful manner that cultivates the spirit and body. In this class you learn the principles of t’ai chi movement and form, and exercises that apply the discipline. The class features work on the 24-forms t’ai chi sequence. Instructor: Paul Novak T’ai chi: continuingT’ai chi ch’uan is an ancient form of Chinese exercise. Quiet, supple movements are performed in a calm and peaceful manner that cultivates the spirit and body. In this class you expand on the principles of t’ai chi movement and form, and on exercises that apply the discipline. The class features intensified work on the 24-forms sequence. Instructor: Paul Novak Tap rhythmsTap classes focus on learning and executing technique and on developing rhythm, timing, and tempo in an upbeat atmosphere.
