Human brain: the adolescent brainIn this workshop for professionals, parents, and others who work with youth, a noted researcher provides the latest research-based information on adolescent brain development and discusses other factors that influence adolescent behavior. Instructor: Kimberly Chance Price Substance abuse and co-occurring mental illnessMany clients who abuse substances have coexisting mental disorders. Many clients with mental illness also abuse psychoactive substances. This one-day workshop focuses on making accurate diagnoses and implementing appropriate treatment strategies when facing the challenge of these coexisting conditions. Instructor: David Mays Alcohol and drug problems in late lifeChronic and late-onset abuse of alcohol and other drugs presents a serious and complex challenge among older adults. In this one-day workshop you learn how to assess for various abuse patterns and about current treatment trends among older adults. Instructor: Merrilee Pickett National Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) ConferenceThis one-day national conference offers keynote addresses, breakout sessions, poster presentations, and exhibits sharing state-of-the-art information and strategies for providers, families, and communities affected by FASD. Instructor: Kristi Obmascher Pharmacology of psychoactive drugsDay One of this training provides an overview of brain function and the impact of drug abuse on the human brain. Day Two provides more comprehensive knowledge of brain function, including neurotransmission on a cellular level and the adaptability of the entire central nervous system (CNS), as well as a more comprehensive understanding of the effect of psychoactive drugs on the CNS. Instructor: Tom Nelson Training of trainers (TOT) for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) educatorsThis week-long training provides an overview of FASDs, promotes strategies, and presents curricula for providing FASD education to a range of health and human-services providers, students, families, and communities. Instructors: Kristi Obmascher, David Wargowski, Georgiana Wilton SUBSTANCE ABUSE CERTIFICATEThe Substance Abuse Certificate Program provides information and skills to help social workers, mental health providers, clergy, and other human-service professionals make real differences in the lives of the substance abusers encountered in day-to-day work situations. The program does not certify you to counsel alcohol and other drug abuse clients; instead it supplements your professional clinical training, providing pertinent information to help you respond more effectively to people with these problems. Courses 1-4 last one day each, Course 5 runs for two days. You must attend Courses 1-4 to be eligible for Course 5. The Certificate program is taught by Flo Hilliard. Become familiar with assessment tools. Learn about effective treatment approaches and other resources for recovery. Instructor: Flo Hilliard Substance Abuse course 4: Substance abuse and familiesLearn the latest clinical and research-based findings about family members of substance abusers. Understand the relationship between substance abuse and violence, including post-traumatic stress disorder. Learn how to help partners and children when their loved ones continue to abuse. Instructor: Flo Hilliard Substance Abuse course 5: Skills for working with substance abusersLearn how to gather accurate information from clients on their substance use and how to soften defenses by using motivational enhancement techniques. Learn how to lead effective groups and understand many other strategies that help substance abusers succeed in treatment.
