Register: 608-263-7023 NEW Motivational Interviewing for individuals with FASDMotivational Interviewing (MI) is a directive, client-centered counseling style for eliciting behavior change. This workshop provides an overview of appropriate adaptations and effective strategies for using MI to address substance abuse issues with clients who have fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) or other cognitive limitations. Instructor: Daniel Dubovsky Substance abuse and co-occurring mental illnessMany clients who abuse substances have coexisting mental disorders. Many clients with mental illness also abuse psychoactive substances. This one-day workshop focuses on making accurate diagnoses and implementing appropriate treatment strategies when facing the challenge of these coexisting conditions. Register: 608-262-8971 SUBSTANCE ABUSE CERTIFICATEThe Substance Abuse Certificate Program provides information and skills to help social workers, mental health providers, clergy, and other human-service professionals make real differences in the lives of the substance abusers encountered in day-to-day work situations. The program does not certify you to counsel alcohol and other drug abuse clients; instead it supplements your professional clinical training, providing pertinent information to help you respond more effectively to people with these problems. Courses 1-4 last one day each, Course 5 runs for two days. You must attend Courses 1-4 to be eligible for Course 5. The Certificate program is taught by Flo Hilliard. Substance Abuse course 1: Fundamentals of substance abuseUnderstand key concepts and the historical, cultural, psychological, and biological perspectives that guide our approaches to substance abuse. Learn why some substance users become abusers and others do not. Instructor: Flo Hilliard Substance Abuse course 3: Assessing and treating substance use disordersLearn the major signs and symptoms of substance abuse and become familiar with several assessment tools. Understand what the research says are the most effective treatment strategies. Recognize differences in assessment and treatment issues for men, women, adolescents and elderly abusers. Instructor: Flo Hilliard Substance Abuse course 4: Substance abuse and familiesPeople involved with substance abusers know fear, helplessness, anger, and grief. In this session you learn clinical and research-based findings on family members of substance abusers. Understand the relationships between substance abuse and violence, including ways to address post-traumatic stress disorder. Also learn ways to help partners and children when their loved ones continue to abuse. Instructor: Flo Hilliard Substance Abuse course 5: Skills for working with substance abusersIn this two-day workshop you learn how to: interview abusers on their substance use, soften their defenses, and use Motivational Enhancement techniques. Also learn group facilitation skills and other strategies for working more effectively with substance abusers.
