About the Writers' Institute:

The Pyle CenterBeginner or advanced, fiction or nonfiction, you have three days to mingle with other writers and agents and to talk about what matters—your writing and the writing life.

There’s a lot that’s new every year at Writers’ Institute, thanks to you. Each year we take your suggestions and build the next year’s event. And because of you, we’ve continued to build this award-winning program for 20 years now.

The staff has added a special something to this year’s program, too, because this is the last official Writers’ Institute conference for Marshall J. Cook, who is retiring from the UW-Madison in 2009. Marshall has been with the program since it started 20 years ago!

We hope you can join us for a special luncheon on Friday with a short workshop presentation from Marshall.

Join our mailing list to receive information about the 2009 program. Be the first to hear about all writing programs by subscribing to The Writing News by sending a blank email to join-writing-news@lists.wisc.edu.

Any questions you may have about the Writers' Institute can be answered by Christine DeSmet, director, 608-262-3447, e-mail: cdesmet@dcs.wisc.edu.

Who is this conference for?
All writers. The new, aspiring writer as well as the advanced writer. Writers of poetry, screenplays, novels, nonfiction books, and freelancers aching to mine the Internet for dollars—we have something for all of you. If you have questions about what workshop best fits you, email or call the conference director at anytime.

What's new?

  • As always, the wonderful, top-notch speakers and agents. Take a look. They’ve come from both coasts and a few states in-between.

  • A touch of Hollywood. Many of our speakers also write screenplays, sell book rights to the industry, manage writers in the entertainment industry and more.

  • New to a writing conference? New to writing? Marshall J. Cook has cooked up two great new workshops just for you. Learn how to get the most out of the conference experience, how to make sense of all the books and services for writers, and things not to do with your hard-earned dough.

  • Trends, trends, trends. The business side of things has changed for writers in just the past couple of years in a big way. The way you sell yourself, the way you pitch—it’s all changed. We have several sessions that will update you.

  • Marshall J. Cook is retiring after 20 years with this conference and more years with UW-Madison. Join us for a relaxed lunch designed to help you catch up with old friends or make new ones—and hear some wisdom from Marshall.

  • We’ve expanded the categories this year in our “Poem or Page Contest.” Push your writing forward fast by entering the contest or by taking advantage of the written critique service.
