Although the Arts Study Abroad program is open to everyone, it offers several features that are designed specifically for teachers:

Participants in this program are awarded Continuing Education Units (CEU) at the completion of the program at no extra cost. Those desiring UW-Madison credit may earn up to three undergraduate or graduate level credits by a combination of participation in events and assignments, depending on the number of credits desired. Professor Chelcy Bowles provides academic oversight for participants who wish to earn credit. Individual project proposals are submitted and approved one month prior to departure. Once approved, the academic director guides the student in selecting activities and events and that will support the project. Subsequent assignments are dependent on the number of credits elected. Please note that academic credits costs are in addition to the program cost.

This page describes our 2007 trip to Paris. Our next program is to be determined. Details will be posted on this page when they are available.

Description of our summer 2007 tour of Paris and Provence:

SieneYou will spend five days in the elegant French capital of Paris, visiting cathedrals, historical sights and enjoying guided tours of the city and the incomparable art collections in The Louvre Museum and The Musée d'Orsay. You will experience the splendor of Palais Garnier with performances of Verdi's opera un Bal Masque and Frederick Ashton's ballet La Fille mal Gardée, as well as an extraordinary group dinner on the Eiffel Tower. There will be plenty of free time, in both the days and evenings, which can be used to discover the Paris that you want to find. Housed in the beautiful Hotel des Ducs D'Anjou, in the heart of Paris, you will be within walking distance. Within walking distance of the hotel are not only the Louvre and Musée d'Orsay, but other incomparable museums, including the Pompidou, the Cluny, the Picasso, and the Carnavalet. And just across the Seine, stroll through the streets of Ile de la Cité to visit the magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral and St. Chapelle, with its astounding stained glass windows.

After your sojourn in Paris you will enjoy an overnight stay in the beautiful city of Beaune, the unofficial capital of the Côte d'Or wine region in Burgundy, with plenty of time to explore the old city center and learn about the wine making process and sample the result of centuries of knowledge.

Palace du PopesThe walled, medieval city of Avignon will be your base in the French region of Provence for a second week of history, art, relaxation and culinary exploration. The group is housed in the centrally located Hotel Bristol. Day trips to Aix-en-Provence and Arles provide a backdrop for your personalized French journey in which you'll have time to craft exactly the sort of experience and study tours that you desire. Generous days of unstructured time will give you the opportunity to join optional excursions to the Roman aqueduct, Pont du Gard, one of the wonders of the Ancient world, or to the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, home of one of the most prestigious of the region's famous Rhône wines.

If you like to discover your own treasures and learn on your own, you are free to walk in the footsteps of the Roman legions; rent a bike bikeand explore the countryside that inspired Van Gogh and Cezanne; bring your paints and work en plein air in the villages or fields of this famously beautiful landscape; learn about early Christian history, or the medieval heritage of Avignon; brush up on your oenology and culinary knowledge in one of the world's great wine and food producing regions. Or you may prefer to spend your free days simply immersing yourself in the tranquil culture of southern France that has captivated the creative imagination of the world for centuries. Enjoy the exciting beginning of the Festival d'Avignon with its central, fringe, and free street events before returning to the USA.

This is sure to be a wonderful and relaxing fortnight in two of the most popular destinations in Europe. Please join us for this exceptional travel/study opportunity!
