Drama Institute for Theatre and Classroom EducatorsDrama Institute workshops are led by experts in current practices and philosophies of theatre and theatre education, endorsed by academic departments at UW-Madison and address at least three of the Wisconsin Teacher Standards as mandated by PI 34, including 1, 9 and 10. While providing specific tools that allow the theatre educator to face challenges in the classroom and rehearsal process, each class directly focuses on the ability to collaborate with peers and education professionals and provides evidence of activities related to goals that apply to classrooms or learning communities.
Features of the Drama Institute:
* Unfortunately, the two June workshops must be held during the same week; this is because this week is the only full week that would accommodate the following scheduling concerns: a later summer release date of many districts, a Friday 4th of July holiday, and limited hotel room availability. Therefore, we found it necessary to offer the programs during the same week in June. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Directing Techniques for the Classroom and Stage: Master Class at APT is the first Drama Institute to be held on the magical grounds of American Players Theatre. With the driving focus of hand-on experience and applicable learning, Kathy Hiteman will lead participants through practical exercises to be utilized immediately in the classroom and on the stage. Throughout this week, guest artists will add to the learning experience by providing a behind the scenes look into the production process at APT. Using Henry IV as the backdrop for learning, participants are required to see the final preview and opening night production. In addition, Ah, Wilderness! is also required. Additional materials fee applies to cover the reduced ticket price. For more information about APT, visit: www.playinthewoods.org
Kathy Hiteman, along with other guest from the American Players Theatre teaching staff, is the instructor for Directing Techniques for the Classroom and Stage. She has been a classroom educator for over 18 years. She is a Herb Kohl Fellowship Award winner and has both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from UW-Madison. She is also a director and has directed over thirty-five productions including Shakespeare plays with her students, community theatre for young people, and high school theatre. Besides her teaching and directing, Kathy is the Education Administrator for American Players Theatre.
