The 2009 WI High School Theatre Festival November 19-21, 2009

Wisconsin High School Theatre Festival is a three day theatre experience for high school students and teachers. Always held at a UW Campus, the festival consists of educational theatre workshops, the Forensic One-Act play competition, and evening events. The evening events include two Wisconsin high schools that are chosen to showcase their school's theatrical production to festival participants. This festival provides students and teachers an opportunity to learn from trained theatre professionals and educators, to take the stage, and to watch their peers perform. All high schools are invited to attend. Prior registration is required.

WI High School Theatre Festival will be held at UW-Whitewater on November 19-21, 2009.

Theatre Festival Workshops

Theatre Festival workshops are scheduled throughout the day on Friday and Saturday in conjunction with Forensic One-Act Plays.  Workshops are an educational opportunity for students expand their theatrical experience in a fun and relaxed environment.  All participating students are welcome to attend.  Workshops are taught by highly qualified instructors who have been involved in theatre and theatre education for numerous years.  Information regarding workshops for the 2009 Theatre Festival will be mailed with the Theatre Festival Booklet.  Workshop subjects that have been included in past years include: acting, auditioning, stage combat, costumes, dance, improvisation, mime, musical theatre, and tech.

Forensic One-Act Plays

One act plays are scheduled throughout the day on Friday and Saturday in conjunction with workshops.  High schools throughout Wisconsin come to the Theatre Festival to perform their one-act play at the State level.  Students perform their play and receive adjudication from Festival Judges.  Participating students are welcome to watch any one act plays.  Family and friends who are not attending the Theatre Festival are welcome as well and may purchase time block tickets ($7 per time block) on site to view a performance.  One-Act performances are a great educational opportunity for students to receive constructive criticism from theatre professionals to enhance their theatrical abilities.

Dark of the Moon
By Howard Richardson & Bill Berney
Presented by Beloit Memorial High School
Directed by Greg Wallendal

Dark of the Moon is a witch tale resembling Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with some Greek myth influences from the Cupid/Psyche tale, yet sets the story deep in the Appalachian Mountains. John, a witchboy from Bald Mountain, having fallen in love with the beautiful human girl, Barbara Allen, strikes a deal with Conjur Woman to transform him into a human so that he can be with Barbara forever. Conjur Woman agrees on the condition that Barbara must stay true to him for one year. If Barbara stays true, Conjur Woman vows to make the transformation permanent. The rest of the witches, a jealous, vindictive bunch, refuse to let John go so easily and continually try to coax him back Bald Mountain. As the Conjur Man says, " 't ain't easy bein' human..." Will John be a human for all time? Will Barbara stay true?

Friday, November 20 at 4 pm and 8 pm

A Midsummer Night's Dream
By William Shakespeare
Presented by Jefferson High School
Directed by Ryan Clarksen

Written around 1595, A Midsummer Night's Dream contains three interwoven plots. The first involves two sets of couples (Hermia and Lysander, and Helena and Demetrius) arguing over who should be with whom. They flee to a forest where the King and Queen of the Fairies (Oberon and Titania) are feuding over the custody of a powerful youth. Oberon instructs Puck, his right-hand fairy, to interfere in the lovers' dealings, which leads to further complications. Another set of characters -- Quince the carpenter, Bottom the weaver, and a group of workers -- head to the same forest to rehearse a play for the duke's wedding. Oberon and Puck seize this opportunity to involve Bottom in the feud against Titania. Meanwhile all of these conflicts must be resolved in some way by the end of the night so as not to interfere with the wedding the next day.
