Beginning Guitar (F55)

This course gives you everything you need to get started - from tuning, fretting, and picking to playing melodies, switching chords, and making up song accompaniments - using well-known songs and tunes as examples. No music experience necessary. Bring your own acoustic guitar. Materials Fee: $2.50 to cover cost of instructor handouts
Instructor Bio:
Christopher Powers has been a professional folk musician for over 20 years, has taught and performed in the bluegrass, jazz, classical, country and blues styles. He toured for six years with the UW-Madison Heritage Ensemble, led five different acoustic bands, and has recorded four albums. Chris teaches privately and through UW-Extension.
Dulcimer Ensemble (B15)

If you've been looking for an opportunity to join dulcet tones with others of the same ilk, then this is for you! Those who play both mountain and hammered dulcimer are welcome this year! Together, we can delve into the world of ensemble playing, exploring both lead/melodic parts as well as rhythm backup, chord and strum styles. Bring your own instruments. Supply list available online or by mail.

Corinne Rockow performs and conducts workshops in the Great Lakes Region as an artist-in-residence and solo performer. She resides in Marquette, MI, where she also teaches Arts Integration courses for Northern Michigan University and conducts "Musikgarten" classes, and private lessons.

Fingerstyle Blues (E44) - Class is cancelled

The Blues is a wide-ranging song form found in nearly every style of music. Fingerpicking is a style of guitar-playing that uses the thumb and 2 or 3 fingers of the right hand. The combination offers students a chance to learn rhythm, melody, chord forms, bass lines, and - of course - basic fingerpicking, using well-known blues songs as examples. Students should be able to play a dozen guitar chords and bring their own acoustic guitars. Materials Fee: $2.50 to cover cost of instructor handouts

Students receive a 20-25 minute private or semi-private daily lesson on voice, banjo, dulcimer, flute, recorder, pennywhistle or guitar. Decide on a reasonable goal for the week and bring any music that you specifically wish to work on. The instructor will supplement this with appropriate study material to aid you in your goal.

SOA Chorus (E50)

Come and join the School of the Arts Chorus for a relaxing daily dose of harmonious fun! The instructor will bring some chosen 2-3 part music of several different genres, as well as opportunities to sing harmonies in other ways such as rounds and informal part-singing instruction. Welcome to readers and non-readers, harmonizers and those who wish to learn how to harmonize! We will develop a fun daily routine of warm-ups, and experiment with folk, spirituals, world music, and show tunes. Nominal materials fee for music is payable to the instructor onsite.
