School of the Arts at Rhinelander

UNIVERSITY CREDIT SEMINAR

Learning through the Arts at the School of the Arts at Rhinelander

(1-3 graduate level credits from UW-Madison)
Instructor: Professor Robin Mello, UW-Milwaukee

Students engage in creative learning through self-selected workshops at the School of the Arts and participation in the Learning through the Arts Seminar. Required readings, group discussions, participatory workshops and daily journal documentation assists participants in discovering not only how learning takes place through the arts but new ways to incorporate arts activities in their classrooms, course development and other educational opportunities.

As participants, you must:

  1. Select 2-3 classes (depending on total hours of instruction) from over 50 courses offered at the SOA.
  2. Meet daily during seminar (1:30-3 pm) to discuss assigned readings, share personal class experiences and participate in workshop activities within the context of current theories on the nature of learning and arts education.
  3. Attend each midday forum (Monday through Friday).
  4. Write a brief analysis paper reviewing the weeks’ events and experiences and how they may inform the individual’s continuing work in the arts.

Students registering for 2 or 3 credits complete an additional written project (typically developing a new arts-related curricular unit for a course they currently teach) individually designed and developed with the seminar instructor onsite (to be submitted within 3 weeks of School of the Arts). Students enrolled for 3 credits also participate in a conference call with the instructor to discuss their projects in early August. (Specific due dates will be included in the credit packet mailed to you after registration is received.)
