MEMF joins the 2009 International Year of Astronomy in a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, including the 400th anniversary of the first astronomical observation made through a telescope by Galileo Galilei. Galileo's father, Vincenzo, a member of the Florentine Camerata, a musician and music theorist who combined the practice and theory of music with mathematical discussion of harmony, influenced Galileo's scientific experiments.
The Madison Early Music Festival, celebrating its tenth season, will explore the works of music and the arts that were inspired by scientific discovery that had a tremendous impact on culture and civilization.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison announces its tenth annual Madison Early Music Festival and Workshop. MEMF was created to provide an opportunity for musicians, scholars, teachers and early music enthusiasts to gather and exchange information and ideas about Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music and to bring acclaimed early music artists to the Midwest to perform in beautiful Madison, Wisconsin. There are opportunities for everyone from those who simply enjoy listening to concerts and lectures to early music scholars and performance opportunities for amateurs and professionals. All listeners, singers, players and dancers are welcome!
The Festival Concert Series consists of seven concerts and features MEMF guest artists-in-residence Quicksilver with Marion Verbruggen, Piffaro, The Newberry Consort, and the Venere Lute Quartet. A free MEMF Participant Concert showcases participant consorts that have been coached throughout the week by MEMF faculty. The week culminates in an All-Festival Concert of choral and instrumental music as participants, faculty, and guest artists perform large scale works together.
