On-campus semester course (noncredit)
Every fall or spring semester you can work on your Spanish-language reading ability in a classroom setting on the UW-Madison campus. Learn to read Spanish for your own reading pleasure or research purposes or to pass the Spanish for Reading Knowledge Exam as part of your graduate-school requirements. This 25-hour course includes a complete grammar study and lively classroom translation practice and has successfully prepared many students for the Spanish for Reading Knowledge exam. The textbook is Spanish for Reading Knowledge, by Jeff Kirsch, the course instructor for more than 10 years. This non-credit course is quite affordable for graduate school budgets. The 10-week class typically meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:15 pm, usually beginning in the third week of the UW-Madison semester and ending three weeks before the end of the academic semester.
Course instructor
Jeff Kirsch (Ph.D., UW-Madison) has taught in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Tulane University and UW-Madison. He currently directs the Independent Learning Program in Spanish and Portuguese in the Division of Continuing Studies at UW-Madison. He is the author of three published novels, many Independent Learning courses and the course textbook.
