Continuing Studies at University of Wisconsin-Madison; Liberal Studies & the Arts

Credit Programs

Although most of our programs are non-credit, several are also available for university credit. The continuing education programs listed below all have a graduate or undergraduate credit option.

  • Independent Learning - Distance education courses allow you to learn at your own pace and in the comfort of your own home. A variety of classes are available for noncredit, college credit or high school credit.

  • Arts Study Abroad: Enjoy the security and comaraderie of a group combined with the freedom of a self-designed schedule of activities. This two-week summer program is for those who want a visual and/or performing arts study experience in a major European city, and features a flexible individualized format so that participants may pursue a curriculum and schedule that will meet their particular needs and desires. University of Wisconsin credit is available with special assignments designed for educational settings, and CEU's are available for non-credit participants.

  • Madison Early Music Festival: Musicians, scholars, and enthusiasts from around the country gather for two weeks in July to enjoy, discuss, and perform music composed before 1750. There are classes, lectures, and performing opportunities for everyone from the novice to the expert, and six public concerts featuring world-renowned artists-in-residence, faculty, and students. University credit and CEUs available for workshop participants.

  • National String Instrument Repair Clinic: Sponsored by the National String Workshop, these clinics provide hands-on experiences for teachers (or anyone) interested in learning more about string instrument repair. Participants bring their own projects to work on under the guidance of skilled repair specialists. There are three tracks: Basic/Beginning Repair, Intermediate Repair (both for violin, viola, cello, bass), and Fretted Instrument Repair. (UW Credit and Continuing Education Unit options are available.)

  • Summer Drama Institute for Educators: The University of Wisconsin Summer Drama Institute for Educators offers one-week intensive learning opportunities specially designed for teachers and theatre professionals.  All workshops are available for graduate credit, CEUs, or non-credit.

  • Write by the Lake: Treat yourself to a week to focus on your passion and earn graduate credit. Choose from science fiction and fantasy, short fiction, writing first novels, revising novels, mystery/suspense, plotting, creating characters, writing life stories, children's literature, poetry, and freelance writing.

  • If you are considering enrolling for credit classes through the UW-Madison, for professional certification or to start a degree program, you will find resources and advisors through the Continuing Studies Adult and Student Services Center.

The Department of Liberal Studies & the Arts is a part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Continuing Studies.
