Bienvenue! Benvenuto! Our distance learning programs in French and Italian offer you the flexibility and convenience of learning a language by correspondence at “your pace, your place” from experienced, highly qualified, and caring instructors.

Whether you are looking for beginning Italian or a guided study of famous French authors, our distance education courses can fulfill your needs. These include first-year, second-year, intermediate, and advanced French classes, as well as first-year, second-year, and reading knowledge classes in Italian.

We are the only provider of advanced distance learning courses in French in the United States. Our advanced French courses include professional French, French Composition, directed study of great French authors, French Civilization, French-Canadian and Quebecois Novels, and Modern African Prose and Poetry in French.

About independent learning

The Independent Learning program at the University of Wisconsin offers self-paced courses in a wide variety of subject areas. You can start any course at any time, and take up to a year to complete each course. Many students find that our courses are accepted as transfer credits to satisfy degree requirements either at the University of Wisconsin or at other institutions.

French courses

• With permission of department, third semester college French may be taken by qualified students for third year high school French.

About the courses

Choose the right course: With a language, it is sometimes a challenge to determine which course is right for you. Please contact Sage Goellner for help in selecting your course. In some cases, we will ask you for a writing sample for correct placement.

Here are some commonly used forms (cover sheets, exam and transcript request) that can give you a feel for how the course works.

Exams: Examinations are mailed to a proctor selected by the student, subject to the approval of the Independent Learning program. Generally, proctors should be academic employees of a college or high school.
  
E-mail lesson submission: Many of our courses give you the option of submitting lessons as e-mail attachments. Attachments should be either plain text or rtf (rich text format.)

If you are already enrolled in a course and want to check on the availability of e-mail submission, contact Student Services at 1-877-UW-LEARN (1-877-895-3276). The Web page for on-line lesson submission is learn.wisconsin.edu/il/coursework.

Registration, transfer, transcripts: All of our university-level French classes are officially part of the University of Wisconsin Transfer Information System and generally transfer to all UW campuses without difficulty. If you are planning to use an Independent Learning course to satisfy the requirements of a particular program of study, you should check with that program's office for guidance. For information on transferring credit to an institution outside the UW system, please consult the registrar of that institution. Costs

The cost of each independent learning course is determined, on a per-credit basis, by the University of Wisconsin System. The cost for university courses is $228 per credit hour, plus a $75.00 administrative fee per course. The current cost for high-school courses is $250.00 per Carnegie Unit (1 unit = 1 year) plus a $75.00 administrative fee. Full-time students at UW campuses may be eligible for tuition remission.
