About Credits

Independent Learning courses are available for three kinds of credit: university credit, high-school credit and Continuing Education Units (CEUs). For specific credit information see the subject area page.

About taking Independent Learning courses for university credit:

Can I earn credit towards my college degree from UW Learning Innovations Independent Learning?

In many cases, yes. Before you commit to taking an Independent Learning course as part of your degree program, you should consult your academic adviser at your own institution. Share the Independent Learning course description and course requirements with your adviser, who be able to tell you whether the credits will apply toward your degree and in which area (humanities, social sciences, etc.).

About taking Independent Learning courses for Continuing Education Units (CEUs):

Continuing education courses strengthen and increase knowledge in specialized areas and can help you advance in your job, explore new interests, work toward certification or licensure, and fulfill requirements for certain UW-Extension programs. Continuing education courses do not carry academic credit toward a degree from the University of Wisconsin. Continuing education courses offer continuing education units (CEUs), which recognize and measure achievement in noncredit courses. (Many university credit courses may be taken for CEUs with the approval of the academic department offering the course.)

About taking Independent Learning courses during high school:

Each of the subject areas has different policies regarding the necessary qualifications to take a course during high school, as well as regarding the kind of credit you will receive. When you access the UW Learning Innovations online catalog, or read the printed Independent Learning catalog, you will see the relevant notices posted with each course description.

Qualified high school students can take university courses for university credit. Enrollment must be approved by an adviser, and students attending a high school must have the written recommendation of a high school counselor or principal.

The high-school credit values listed here are standardized Carnegie units. High School credit
