"Emma has been meaning to read more ever since she was twelve years old. I have seen a great many lists of her drawing up at various times of books that she meant to read regularly through-and very good lists they were-very well chosen, and very neatly arranged-sometimes alphabetically, and sometimes by some other rule. But I have done with expecting any course of steady reading from Emma. She will never submit to any thing requiring industry and patience."—Mr. Knightley in Jane Austen's Emma
Do you resemble Jane Austen's Emma, making lists of books you plan to read but never actually getting around to reading them? If so, consider taking The Courage to Write: Women Novelists of the Nineteenth Century. This correspondence course asks you to read and write about eight novels: Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice; Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; George Sand's Marianne; Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre; Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin; Harriet Wilson's Our Nig; Louisa May Alcott's Little Women; and Kate Chopin's The Awakening.
Taught by Professor Emily Auerbach via mail or e-mail to students around the world, this course meets the needs of parents wanting to continue their education while caring for young children in the home, working professionals, retirees, teachers seeking continuing education credits, and booklovers and students of all types and ages.
This course is available for college credit or noncredit. To earn three college credits, you need to complete not only the eight papers but also a two-hour final exam taken in a location near you; if you are taking the course for enrichment purposes you do not need to take an exam or receive grades.
All students have a year to complete the course and all will receive comments from Professor Auerbach on their written work.

(For The Courage to Write course, see "English": the college credit course is English U350-249; the non-credit alternative is English C350-A249.)
After you receive your catalog, call Professor Auerbach at 608-262-3733 if you have any questions about the content of the courses. Perhaps Mr. Knightley should have suggested independent study to Emma as a way to quit "meaning to read" and begin engaging in a "course of steady reading"!
