Doug WhittleDouglas E. Whittle

Doug Whittle comes to the University of Wisconsin after spending 12 years as professor of fine art at Converse College in South Carolina where he taught all levels of painting, printmaking and drawing along with special topics courses.

He received a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting from the University of Florida in 1984 before spending two years in Zaire, Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer building fish ponds with local tribesmen in the Congo River basin. He returned to the University of Florida and received a master of fine arts degree in printmaking in 1990.

His work as a painter and printmaker has been exhibited in the Krakow Academy of Art in Poland, The Center of Contemporary Art in Miami, FL, The Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland, FL, The Greenville County Museum of Art in South Carolina, The St. Petersburg Museum of Art, The Columbus Museum of Art in Georgia, The Huntington Museum of Art in WV, and in many university and commercial galleries across the country. Institutions that own his artwork include The Fogg Museum at Harvard University, Carolina First Bank, The Palmetto State Bank, Marriott Hotels Inc., Wofford College, and other private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Since his time in the Peace Corps where he traveled throughout Zaire, Zambia and Zimbabwe, his solo journeys have included a trans-Asian trip from St. Petersburg to Hong Kong via Mongolia and China; Europe, Central America, Japan, Alaska and the United States. At Converse College he led student art trips to New York City, Europe and Ghost Ranch in New Mexico before being hired to lead educational travel programs for the Department of Liberal Studies and the Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
