What does the tuition fee cover?

The tuition fee covers only instruction.  Students bring their own supplies.  Meal and lodging costs are separate.  Students make their own meal and lodging arrangements (including payment) directly through the Green Lake Conference Center.  Those staying off-site are required to pay a separate Conference Center parking fee.

Does it matter if I am a beginner?

No, the instructors interact with each student according to his or her level of experience.  Students can work at their own pace on their own projects either under the informal guidance of the instructor or independently.

Do I have to paint in a particular medium?

No, students are free to paint in the medium of their choice (watercolor, oil, acrylic, colored pencil, pastels, etc.).

How does the “studio” work?

Formal studio hours are from 9 am-5 pm Monday through Thursday and from 9 am to noon on Friday.  Students can also work in the studio before and after formal hours.  In addition to individual attention, informal group instruction is offered throughout the week.  Students may also choose to paint outside on the grounds of the Center.

Evening events include a Sunday “get acquainted” dinner, Sunday and Wednesday evening critique sessions, and other informal activities.  For the Sunday night critique, you may bring a work-in-progress or completed work.

What about supplies?

A list of “suggested” basic supplies will be sent to you approximately one month before the workshop begins.  However, you are free to bring any materials you would like to work with, including still life and photographs. Please bring odorless mineral spirits (no turpentine), if working in oils.   Your supplies can remain at your work site throughout the session.

Worktables are provided.  In addition to bringing your own art supplies, students need to bring easels and drop cloths for their worktables.  Students who would like to work outdoors should bring a portable chair.  If you plan to work in the evening, or want special lighting, bring a light and electrical cord.

Hot water is available at Pillsbury Hall during studio hours; bring your own instant beverages.

Where can I stay?

The Green Lake Conference Center offers three lodging options: conference hotels, manor houses shared with other participants and a campground (subject to seasonal availability).  Participants staying at the manor houses or campground will need transportation to Pillsbury Hall and the Kraft Centre (walk, bike, drive).  It is approximately one mile to Pillsbury Hall and the Kraft Centre from the manor houses and one mile from the campground. Both are in opposite directions.

To receive the double rate, participants must specify the name of their roommate at the time of booking. Those looking for a possible roommate can list their name with the UW–Madison program coordinator, Kathy Berigan, 608-263-3494.  However, if we can not pair you with a roommate, you will be charged the single rate.

What if I miss the Green Lake Conference Center lodging deadline?

If you miss the stated lodging deadline, you should still contact the Green Lake Conference Center — 1-800-558-8898 — directly to check for room availability.

Are meals included?

No, meals are separate.  The Kraft Centre, near Pillsbury Hall and the hotel facilities, features a buffet-style cafeteria.  You may purchase a convenient meal plan for the week or daily tickets for any combination of individual meals (breakfast, lunch, or dinner).  Meal plans/tickets can be purchased in advance or onsite from the Conference Center.

Manor houses have kitchen facilities.  Students can also dine offsite at area restaurants (approximately 2 miles from the Center to Green Lake). The cost of the Sunday evening dinner is included in the meal plan or it can be purchased separately for those who want individual meal tickets or who are staying offsite.

What about parking?

If you are staying at the Conference Center, your lodging fee includes parking.  If you are not staying at the Center, you will be charged approximately $41.00 plus tax, for use of the facility, Sunday dinner and parking for the week.  If you are staying at a manor house, you will need transportation (walk, bike, drive) to Pillsbury Hall and the Kraft Centre.  The one-way distance is approximately one mile.

What about handicapped accessibility?

The Green Lake Conference Center has handicapped accessible hotel rooms.  (Manor house rooms are not handicapped accessible.)  Pillsbury Hall and the Kraft Centre, where meals are served, are ramped. Pillsbury Hall has an elevator.   A vehicle may be needed by some students to travel the short distance between Pillsbury Hall, the hotel, and the Kraft Centre.

Emergency Cancellations

In the event that the instructor is unable to teach due to a personal emergency, students will be notified.  The Spring workshop will not be cancelled due to snow emergencies.  Students should use their own judgment regarding travel plans and safety.  Students who need to cancel for personal reasons should contact the UW–Madison program coordinator, Kathy Berigan, and the Green Lake Conference Center directly if lodging arrangements were made.
