Drawing and Painting Classes

Drawing and painting are the foundation skills of making art. These classes provide a range of experiences in the basic mediums for beginning and intermediate students. Most of the classes are held at the UW-Madison Humanities Building, home of the Department of Art. Excellent teachers will help you nurture your Self, develop your creativity and build your art skills. Chinese brush painting workshop
Learn ancient Asian art techniques as you use your brushes, ink, and rice paper. Create in Section 1: peony tree (contour), yellow bird with tree, angel fish, and  frogs with lily pads; in Section 2: mountain cliffs with water and boats, goldfish, egrets, monkey with tree, minnows with lily pads, and peony tree (spontaneous style). You also learn the calligraphy for each subject. Class discussion after each lesson.
Instructor: Stella Dobbins (MA, University of Houston) is an artist and art historian who exhibits her work nationwide and is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society.

Drawing and realism
In this 10-week intermediate drawing class you explore realism in pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, and powdered graphite. Learn tricks and techniques to enhance the illusion of volume and texture through demonstrations, handouts, engaging instructional videos, and hands-on experimentation and exploration.
Instructor: Christopher Buckingham (BFA, Oregon State University) is an artist, curator, and proprietor of the Madison arts-space The Project Lodge. His individual and collaborative work has shown nationally and been written about in ArtNews, Artweek, and Modern Painters.

Drawing: introduction
In this 10-week class you learn how to translate the 3-D world into 2-D, step by step. Using a variety of black and white drawing materials, you experiment with new ways of mark making. Through demonstrations, handouts, individualized instructions, and engaging instructional videos, you explore the basics of observational skills, perception, and rendering.
Instructor:
Lisa Fraker (MFA, UW–Madison) focuses on drawing and painting, specifically using the media of gouache, watercolor and acrylics.

Drawing: super realism in graphite pencil
Learn the techniques of 2-D photo-realism in this two-day workshop showcasing the beauty and purity of the most basic of all art materials: the graphite pencil. This is a project-based workshop for those with basic drawing experience; learn to control your marks for a flawlessly realistic “fool the eye” still life. The instructor provides many materials; you receive a supply list when you enroll.
Instructor:
Kay Brathol-Hostvet (BFA, UW-Stout) is an enthusiastic instructor bringing a wealth of experience to the classroom. Her landscapes are in private and corporate collections throughout the Midwest.

Experimental drawing: beginning to intermediate
This is a six-week mixed-media drawing class with collage elements in some assignments. We explore combinations of crayon, watercolor, pen, graphite, gouache, and India ink. We may also introduce some nontraditional drawing mediums such as coffee and tea. The goal is to create alternative approaches instead of using only one medium in an image.
Instructor:

Exploring color and texture on paper and fabric
Explore new techniques of applying color to paper, texture to fabric, and paint to unusual objects in this one-day workshop. Work with color applications using paints, inks, bleach, and other materials. Use these materials for collage art, notecards, quilts, placemats, pillows, other fabric art, or whatever your imagination creates.
Instructor:
Nancy Welch (BA, Colorado State Univ.) has an art background, owned and managed a graphic design firm for 28 years, and continues to explore the playful side of art.

Figurative painting: Sunday morning
What better way to start a Sunday! Come and paint from a live model in a relaxed, uninstructed studio setting in this 11-week class. The model holds one pose for three hours (with breaks), allowing you to hone in and develop your figurative painting skills. Oils, acrylics, and drawing media welcome.
Instructor:
Rich Corzatt (BA, Ripon College) is a graphic and Web designer and a figurative oil painter, and a member of Chicago’s oldest art league, the Palette and Chisel Club.

Figure drawing: beginning to intermediate
This relaxing yet challenging 10-week course covers a variety of approaches to drawing the nude human form. Learn proportions and basic anatomy while experimenting with various media and techniques. More advanced students work on developing style and honing skills.

Figure drawing studio: Wednesdays
Draw from the model for 12 weeks in a non-stressful environment. Since there is no instruction you may proceed at your own pace, in your own way. Background music adds to the creative mood. Warmup gestures, 10- to 40-minute poses, and 30- to 60-minute poses.
Coordinator
: Joshua Ludke (art education degree, UW-Madison; and art therapy degree from UW-Superior) draws, paints, and makes prints and is a substitute teacher in the Madison schools.

Focus on face
Sample a variety of media as we study the proportion and creative representation of the human face in this eight-week class. Learn how to render people realistically while capturing expression and personality. Work from still images and sitting models. Great present idea: everyone would love a portrait.
Instructor:
Susan Tierney (MFA in painting and drawing, UW-Madison) is a skilled naturalistic artist with a particular interest in creative portraiture. She exhibits regionally and works as a portrait commission artist.

Nature and garden journal
Combine your interests in art and nature by starting a journal in this five-week class. Record plants or animals, or make seasonal notations in a variety of media: drawing, pen and ink, watercolor, and collage. Some art background helpful, but class is intended to generate excitement for visually exploring your musings about the natural world. Weather permitting, a class may meet at a garden. 
Instructor:
Cynde Quinn (certified master gardener) has taught graphic design and oil and watercolor painting for many years. Much of her personal work focuses on gardening themes.

Oil painting techniques of the old masters
In this four-session studio class you learn about the techniques and materials used by 16th- and 17th-century masters through step-by-step demonstrations. One of the approaches we explore is the use of an under painting followed by glazes of transparent color. You may choose to incorporate any or all of their methods in your own work, with individual help from the instructor.

Painting: beginning through advanced
Weekly demonstrations and mini-lectures cover materials, painting approaches, and color mixing and theory, and provide inspiration for individual expression in this nine-week class. Beginning students learn the basics of painting in oil or acrylic, from technique to composition, through introductory assignments. Intermediate and advanced students are encouraged and supported while developing your own style and theme in a supportive studio atmosphere.
Instructor:
Katherine Rosing (MFA, Northern Illinois University) has taught painting, drawing, color theory, watercolor, and design for 15 years at colleges in Illinois and Wisconsin. Her work is exhibited across the U.S. and has been shown in China, Germany, and Japan.

Painting workshop: color for painters
Explore the beautiful complexities of color specifically relevant to painting in this four-week class. Focused exercises explore color mixing, tonality, composition, and harmony. Beginners: build a foundation in color as you begin the journey into painting. Intermediate and advanced students: deepen your understanding of color and refine your personal vision and painting skills while exploring color issues relevant to individual style. Choose oil, acrylic, or watercolor.

Katherine Rosing (MFA, Northern Illinois University) has taught painting, drawing, color theory, watercolor, and design for 15 years at colleges in Illinois and Wisconsin. Her work is exhibited across the U.S. and has been shown in China, Germany, and Japan.

Pastel interpretations
A very adaptable medium, soft pastel is perfect for learning different painting techniques. In this studio workshop you do several interpretations from the same photographic reference. Each interpretation is quite unique; consequently you learn which styles and techniques work best for your own artistic vision. We send you a supply list when you enroll and we provide all paper in class.

Pastel workshop: beginning to intermediate
The most direct of all media, pastels produce works of lush, vibrant beauty. Because pastel is the most direct of all media, techniques of working with pastel are not difficult. This five-week course includes an introduction to materials and provides practice in working with pastels and developing a personal style. Gain skill in handling materials and learn ways to care for completed works. Drawing experience is helpful.
Instructor:
Barbara Erdman (PhD, UW–Madison) has many years of experience teaching drawing and painting and is currently a faculty member at UW–Eau Claire. She has exhibited at the Corcoran Museum in Washington and at Cornell University.

Realist painting
This class for intermediate and advanced oil or acrylic painters meets on the second Saturday of each month and focuses on the realist approach to painting. We examine materials, techniques, color, composition, drawing, and content through individual instruction and critique in four sessions. Some painting experience recommended.

Realist painting in oils or acrylic
This six-hour studio gives experienced painters the option of working on an individual project from your own reference photos and of refining your skills by painting from a still life, with a new set-up provided at each of four sessions. We emphasize composition, color, and personalized instruction.

Studio painting at Green Lake
Immerse yourself in a week of painting in the medium of your choice at the Green Lake Conference Center. Participate in critiques, reflections, and demonstrations on various painting and drawing topics and techniques under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Traveling with watercolor: the prequel
In this six-week course you prepare for  Traveling With Watercolor by practicing in the studio the basic watercolor techniques that work best when painting on the go. Learn how to select subject matter from the world around you and compose a painting with thumbnail sketches. Also become fluent in fast wash and brush techniques.

Traveling with watercolor
Armed with a watercolor sketchbook, color tubes, and a few other tools, you can do watercolor in any place you care to travel. In this six-week class, learn how to capture that memorable scene or person: learn to complete a watercolor sketch in record time, with fast-wash and brush techniques, while taking a fresh look at texture, transparency, and the sparkle of white paper.

Watercolor

Watercolor and beyond
During this two-session intermediate class you learn how to make a watercolor paint itself. Use impressions, stamps, plastic wrap, and tissue paper to help you create wet-into-wet paintings. Create spontaneous effects with watercolor or any water-media on paper. Demonstrations and lecture focus on expanding your confidence via technique, composition, color, dominance, contrast and emphasis. Expect to loosen up and have fun. Free parking.
Instructor:
Mary Ann Inman (BFA, UW-Whitewater) is a member of the Midwest Watercolor Society and president of the Wisconsin Regional Artists Association. She has taught workshops in watercolor, matting, and framing.

Watercolor: beginning
In this five-week class you learn to identify the basic tools and individual characteristics of watercolor. Acquire the skills, utilize the “tricks” available, and understand the value of planning.
